WC4 - Quits after first disk is done

Hexxaex

Spaceman
Hey all, I just reinstalled WC4, and it's been at least 5 or 6 years since I've played it. The first disk brought back a lot of memories, but that's where the problem is. Right after the cutscene where the Lexington jumps from the Tyr System, the screen briefly flashes and I think it's asking me for the 2nd disk, but it quits to DOS right away. I've tried to put in the 2nd disk and run WC4 again, but then it asks me to load my last saved game, which requires disk 1, and so on and so forth.

I'm running Windows XP and am using DosBox 0.7

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are there any scratches on the disc? Does it give any kind of error message when you're back in dos? You might reinstall in case one of the .tre files on your hard drive has a problem.

The disk looks fine, not exactly pristine, but no significant problems on the surface. I've reinstalled a couple of times but still get the same results, unfortunately. Just after the jump cinematic I mentioned, the top quarter of my screen flashes green for a second, and then it brings me back to DOS with the chicken message. It seems to think that I've quit the game, I guess.

I downloaded the patch, but whenever I try to run the batch file in DOS, it tells me I need Windows 95, and whenever I run the WC4W.exe file, it tells me that it can't find the application files on the hard drive or CD. I hope I'm doing something wrong here...

You can run the install.bat in Windows' cmd dos prompt. Make sure you include the installation path for the rest of the game to tell the patch where to look. For example:

install c:\wc4

And then set Windows 95 compatibility mode for wc4w.exe, and make sure the disc is in the drive.

The patch seems to have done the trick, but now it quits on me when it asks for disk 5. This just happened now and I haven't given it any thought, so I'll probably try cleaning the disk when I have the time. All the other disk-change messages seem to be free of problems, though, so I thank you for that.

You've made it through the game pretty quickly. Glad it works. You can try maybe shifting back to DOSBox/the DOS version for the transition from Disc 4 to 5 to see if that's any different.

To avoid problems with dirty discs i'd recommend creating images of all cds and then mount them on virtual drives such as daemon tools (emulates up to 4 drives). It makes gameplay a lot more convenient as well. :p
