wc4 does not work with VIA and Win98 SE

I need help, going insane! How do i get wc4 to work on my system running win98 SE with the below spec:
512mbRAM
GeForce mx440 64mb
VIA motherboard with VIA sblive onBoard sound compatible driver
700 mhz
20gig hdd

I have tried adding the soundblaster files on my hard drive to the startup disk but still i get no sound when i click 'test sound' and the video intro is dark and when i press escape i get the first interactive screen asking to choose whether to upset seether or not but no video image.

Boot disk did not help, and i tried the win98 FE boot disk from bootdisk.com too.

It seems to be the need for a 16 bit sound driver, but i dont know what to do.

Anyone please help. Starlancer is also an old game ,yet runs fine, why not wc4. Hope theres a brainbox in here.

Er... have you tried just running it in Windows?

If that doesn't work, install it in Windows, and then throw on the Windows 9x patch from the files section.

Also, what does running Freelancer have to do with running Wing Commander 4 :)... Even if there were some sort of magical 'all old games work if one does' policy, they aren't from the same generation of space sims.

Yeah.. hard to believe WC3 is coming up on ten years old.. Prophecy Gold on five.
 
wc4 and 98se

thanks for the replies. will try that patch, though what does it do? i have got wc4 to work on a win98 first ed with voodoo 3 card, but not on se. i tried installing it in windows the first time. same problem occurs whether installed from DOS, 98se, or boot disk. wont play the sound and that may be why the video is not playing when you click 'save settings and run wc4' will see what patch does, any other possibilities?
 
It updates the game to the retail Windows version of the game. It basically goes and changes the hardware calls to DirectX API calls and the like. For the odd people that have problems running the DOS version in windows 9x, the patch will almost certainly fix the problems.
