WC4 CD Problem

Avance

Spaceman
hello to the board! ;)
im a new board member, and im very happy to find to find wc patches to play these old games again :)! So, big thx to those, who made the patches! ;)
Regarding the WC4:
I have the CD version and windows 2k installed without compatibility mode.
After copying files to my hard driver to c:\wc4, I patched the win95patch to the folder. when i try to start the wc4w.exe win2k gives me an error : "Virtual Protect()failed."
Therefore i took the wc4fix.exe to patch the wc4w.exe. I get into the game and from the beginning it works perfect, after the second mission there are more and more errors after movies(so i often skip them before they end). But at the 7th or 8th mission (first mission with captain paulson-> occupying the science station) the game goes out to the windows desktop with an error every time :mad: :( . Does anybody know the problem and have a solution?
im very sad that i cant eject/skip or end that mission :( .. Hope somebody can help me! Thx in advance :)

Edit:
I have tried wc4 with the dosbox yet! i cant use the joystick with and without patch. I do have Sidewinder 3D pro and logitech wingman extreme.

There is a way to get the compatability mode in win2k but I don't remeber what it is. However, regarding the joystick and dosbox, make sure you only have one controler plugged in at a time. otherwise many games get confused as to which one ot wants to use. Then in wc4 inflight hit alt-o and check the joystick box and click save. See if that works.

Oh, and after all that medling I'd suggest a fresh install and *only * apply the win95 patch.
Then we can do more troubleshooting from there if needed, like enabling the compatability mode. Apperntly its a very convoluted process in win2k.

To enable compatibility mode:

1. Make sure you are running SP4 with the latest version of everything (drivers and directx).
2. If you have not yet, run this command in start > run: regsvr32 %systemroot%\apppatch\slayerui.dll
3. Create a shortcut to the file you want to run
4. Bring up the shortcut's properties (right-click menu) and enable Windows 95 compatibility mode (which will now be enabled from the above step)
5. Run the program *using the shortcut*

So you need an updated 2K, you have to turn on compatibility mode via command line entry, and then you can only enable compatibility mode via a shortcut link.

Hy!
thx for qick answers!
i changed to winxp -> there wc4 works, but i have to add win95 compatibility mode!
@AD:
i installed the compatibility mode, but it doesnt work, i placed an icon on the desktop and activated compatibility mode -> it doesnt change anything!
i didnt have plugged in two joysticks while i was playing, that wont work ;)
@ChrisReid:
1. it was win2k sp4
2/3/4. answer above, but strange that the compatibility mode from win2k doesnt work :mad:

a question regarding wc3 -> does the game crash in the mission after the behemoth was destroyed? my pc hang there everytime, doesnt matter if win2k or xp!

There's no specific bug there, but if the game is trying to jump from flight straight to a full video, that could be creating some sort of problem for you.
