WC3 sound popping and stuttering with VDMsound

I had no luck getting my Kilrathi Saga WC3 to work so I'm using my old DOS version with VDMsound. With VDMsound the game runs fine, but I get popping and crackling noises when sound effects play, and movies will stutter on occasion. It's not too bad, the game is certainly playable, just wondering if anyone knows how to clear that up. I'm running Windows XP SP2 with a soundblaster audigy card.
 
What type of processor and motherboard do you have? VIA Chipsets will produce annoying audio pop and crackle with sound blasters under certain conditions. There don't seem to be any good fixes for that.
