I am trying to put together an old school gaming machine on an older laptop (haven't decided what machine to use yet, still trying to decide what will work best). WC3 is about the highest end game I wish to play, but I have a question. Does it need 3d acceleration to run? Also any other funky requirements for the old DOS version to work? Yes, I realize I could use DOSbox and emu it, I still haven't quite got DOSbox to work right, and I kinda want a seperate machine to do my old gaming on anyway (if I can get it to work). Any help?

Prophecy and Secret Ops are the only Wing Commander games that take advantage of a 3d accelerator card, and even then it's not required (though it is highly recommended). Shouldn't need too much to run WC3. 16 megs of ram (versus the minimum 8) speeds mission loading times to a significant degree.

Soundcard should be the biggest problem. An ISA one would be optimal for compatibility. SB16, or an AWE in PCI format are also ok. Anything newer starts to get problematic.

RE WC Games and 3D cards: Only the fan MODS UE and Standoff REQUIRE a 3D card.

Thanks!

Great, that helps. But what about onboard sound from a laptop? I'm thinking IBM Thinkpad 560 or so. Anybody have a previous success with this or something similar (or anything at all laptop-wise)?

Is that an AC97 compatible soundcard as most laptops have nowadays? If so you are out of luck.

Next dumb question

How do you tell if the sound card is AC97 compatible? I'm waiting to get the machine till I know what will run what I want. Anybody know a perfect laptop for the job? Tough question, I know, but figured it couldn't hurt.

Thats usually stated rather big on the box or in the manual. Its the system 90% of all laptop and on board soundchips use (I think it is the only one besides the Nvidia Soundstorm and maybe some Intel one). The system properties of the system in question should also give you the driver name which is quite revealing here. But as long as you don't have access to the system...
