Rogue Leader
I haven't played WC3 for a long, long, time, but when I did it was on Win98 (original). Back then, I could play the game with better MIDI music than basic FM synthesis, presumably because of the software synthesis that comes with DirectMusic. I did this by choosing MPU-401 General MIDI in the install menu, though I'm sure I got the same effect by choosing Wave Blaster, Roland, etc. I'm not sure, but I think I tried this not long after getting Win98, so I think the DirectX version would have been whatever came with Win98 (4? 5?).
Anyway, for whatever reason, I can't play WC3 in Windows with General MIDI anymore. Admittedly, I like to fiddle a bit with my system, and not everything works or strange things happen as a result. This is what happens when I try to play WC3 with General MIDI now:
BTW, the '' really is there in the error text (anyone remember an ancient DOS Pitfall game using ASCII characters?), I don't what the coder is trying to say there...

I know this probably means nothing to anyone here, but it's all I have to go on. It's still the same computer I played WC3 on last time, same soundcard, etc. It happens on DirectX 8.0 and 8.1, the latter being what I have currently. I just hope there's some way to fix this without having to reinstall Windows yet again. (I truly despise the clutter that comes with multiple install/uninstalls.) I can still play the game with FM synthesis, but if the grass is greener on the other side...Loading Wing Commander III .......
