WC3 Kilrathi Saga XP

Well, I have joined the ranks of those who can't get WC3 KS to run in XP. I have tried everything (going back to Nvidia's 40.72 drivers, running the W2K patch and then setting W2K compatibility mode, setting priority to Low, etc.) that I have seen posted here. Occasionally I can get through to the point where I can talk to Hobbes, but then clicking on the Lift or the Simulator freezes. Often, I can't even get to the ship before the freeze happens, and many times I can't even get past the Origin movie without a freeze.

Any other thoughts? Or is it time to whip out my Win98 CD and hope that dual-booting does the trick?

Welcome to the CIC. A lot of people can get WC3 KS to run on their computers to run with minimal crashing by brining up the task manager and setting the priority for Wing 3 to "low." Personally, I had to pull out my laptop and play it on that computer. If your computer is freezing up completely, I would recommend playing the game in a window (alt + enter) and save often.

Playing in a window and setting to low priority

Unfortunately, I've tried both of those. :( I think I may just have to dual-boot. (Well, that or hijack our one remaining Win98 box as a Wing Commander gaming system and file server...)

Having a dedicated Wing Commander machine is the best route to go. I am thinking about building a legacy machine myself.

Just one thing that might make life a little easier when it comes to this. If you have an ATI video card, (possibly Nvidia too but I don't have one to try it) then download Radlinker from http://www28.brinkster.com/chrisww1942/ if you don't already have it. Then right click on the WC3W.exe and choose custom settings. Next right click and goto properties, the first page that opens up let's you choose the priority of the program. Set it to low and make sure you run WC3 KS from a shortcut pointing to the exe.

On another note, the program is very useful for ATI folks to setup custom settings for each game they run, the 3D tab let's you choose AA, AF, Vsync options etc. For Direct3D you need to tick mode change, OpenGL doesn't need this.

Thx for the info :)
Although I doubt it'll help me fix my KS WC3 probs (alrready tried it at low), it might be quite handy for other games :D

I still get freezing on low, but at least I get fewer freezes. Seems to happen at the end of a video, usually can get around it by escaping, but it's not the same.....

Try to set priority to normal

Actually I thought what I read here is settign priority to normal not low. Anyways that is what I had to do, and have been doing, and have not had any issues.

I have an ATI Radeon 9600 and I do not believe I ahd to install any patches for KS to work, although I did have to install patches for WC 4 DVD.
