I got the urge of playing the Wing Commander series, and after completing WC1 & 2 i went on to WC3 (not KS). Installation goes fine, except that it complains on my CD-Rom being too fast.
However, when I start the game, It crashes efter a while into the intro with an Exception Error 13 (Wc3 claims it is related to CD problems). I played around with the options (why does it have to do all those tests every time, aaargh!?), and figured out that the game worked if I disabled Digital Sound (and using FM music, since SB music requires Digital sound).
I played around with the options some more and came to the following conclusion (and I also got really fed up with calibrating my joystick, the screen and whatnot ) :
Using Sb16 - Can't even start the game, Illegal Operation...
SB Pro - Game crashes almost instantly.
Normal SB - Game crashes about the time the Kilrathi start talking in the intro.
This seems kind of wierd, since the Audigy manual mentions that you should select them in that order (first SB16, then SB Pro and last Conventional SB)
I don't know if the error is because the sounds are read too fast from the CD, or WC3 just thinks it is a CD problem when it's actually a sound related one.
I tried running the game in DOS, but my computer locks up as soon as I start the game. (can't even run the config with wc3 -i)
I searched these forums, and even though exception 13 is mentioned a few times, I couldn't see anyone finding a solution to the problem. (except disableing sounds, but what fun is that?)
So what I'm basicly asking is: is there anyway of solving the problem, or am I stuck playing WC3 without sounds (or getting an older computer to run it on)?
And my system specs if it matters:
Motherboard: Intel D850MVR
Processor: Intel P4 2.26GHz
Graphics: Creative GF4 4600
Pioneer DVD 40X (slowed down to 24X)
Plextor CDRW 40/12/40
2 Seagate 80GB
Soundcard: Sb Audigy (I think the IRQ is 5, but it shouldn't matter since I'm using the SB16 Emulation, besides I'm using XP right now, and it refuses to show the values. Or rather, it shows some virtual emulation values, like an IRQ of 23)
Sb16 Emulation: I/O Adress 220, IRQ 7, LDMA 3, HDMA 7 (this is of course what I enter in the setup)
Win98 SE
(Yes, I have Win XP Pro also, but since I haven't got the SB16 emulation installed in XP, I wouldn't get any sound anyway)
