Help!!
My 1st disc for WC3 is scratched and unreadable.
Can someone send me a copy of this disc or tell me how to replace it?

Thanks,
Jim

I doubt anyone is going to just "send" you a disk to replace it, that would uncharacteristically noble and selfless this day and age.

To replace it? Ebay. Always Ebay.

You might want to stack your classic games in their boxes, and work with copies or mounted images, it will keep your disc safe forever.

wing commander 3 is available on ebay under 10 dollars, and can still be purchased
on computer exhibitions, there it goes for a little more though.

In some cases we might be able to replicate Origin's disc exchange service, but it's probably not practical here. Wing Commander 3 is cheap enough to replace that that's probably the best way.

but it would so much easier....

...but it would so much easier if one of you could just burn the disc and drop it in the mail for me. Of course I would pay for shipping etc.... I hate having to buy an entire new game on ebay and pay for the shipping. :)

Quick question: Are you insane? Sorry. Simply put, Wing Commander III is copywrited. In simpler terms, if they send it to you, both they and you have broken the law. This is not like Freespace 2 where the End User Legal Agreement allows owners of the game to copy and distribute the game as they please (although I still wonder about that, honestly). Simply put, no one on these forums is going to risk the site, let alone their own legal standing so you can save 10 BUCKS!!!!!!! Yes. I got my copy for 10 bucks about 2 months ago.

Ok... now that the rant is done. I want you to try something for me. Pop the disk in your drive and open windows explorer. let me know if the disk literally cannot be read or if it shows the files. If it shows the files, there's still hope for your disk. Let me know how it turns out.

technically, it's licensed.

so long as he owns a license, he has the right to have/make however many copies he wants.

he just can't copy THE LICENCE. (i.e. allow more software users than licenses purchased)

of course, you can't technically copy a license because it is a right you were bestowed when purchasing the game.

but essentially, so long as all the people running the game have a license of their own, everythign is a-ok.

so if one license owner sends anothe license owner a disk copy, it's perfectly LEGAL.

things are done this way specifically to avoid sales rights.

essentially, if you purchase something, you have the right to do whatever you want to it, including modify and resell it.

software companies don't want you to modify/resell/REVERSE-ENGINEER their software.
and they don't want people buying, repackaging as their own, and reselling their software too (degrades their brand name).
so they don't sell you their software, they license it.

hence, once you buy software, you're allowed to make a backup. 1 disk or a million disks it's still 1 license, and 1 person allowed to use it at any one time.

you were on the right track for other things, such as music CD's.
when you buy a cd, you buy NOT a licence, but the physical disk.
that disk, is definately copyrighted, and you're not allowed to make any copies of it because every extra instance is stolen goods.
(versus software, where every disk instance is meaningless. it's now many users [licensed and unlicensed] that matters)

also, if you actually own the game, you're perfectly within the law to download a disk image from a filesharing network.
should be able to get it faster there than in the mail. (so long as you have broadband)

I own the game. Bought it used from a bookstore a while back... paid real money for it. I waited about a year before trying to install it and thats when I noticed the reading problem.

Ya know, If I wanted to steal the game, I wouldn't ask for just one disc.

Anyway, the disc is scratched on the label side and I think that's the problem. By the way applying Brasso to the read-side really shined it up nice....removed some surfacr scratches too.

Originally, I was hoping that Origin would exchange the CD but i don't even know if they exist. I'm new to this Wing Commander World. Do they??

If not I don't see it being a big deal to get a copy of the disc.....disc image...whatever.

Origin now operates out of EA's main studio in Los Angeles, but they no longer replace software from the 90s.

That's the problem there. It's not really worth people's time so you can save a couple dollars. If you're willing to pay someone else for shipping and materials, you're already most of the way to buying a whole new copy. If you were going to give me $5 to get you a disc 1, it'd be the best use of my time to just go to eBay and buy a copy to be sent to you rather than duplicate, process and send one on my own.

I stand corrected. Unfortunately, p2p copies of Wing Commander III disk images are a bit hard to come by. I know this because my poor copy has some problems with disks 3 and 4... they read so hopefully when I have some drive space to spare I'll be backing those up. Thank god I lucked into a brand new copy of WC IV. It run and work so pretty with patch!

You also might try getting one of those disk-cleaning fan thingeys. I've heard good things about them. If your CD drive can still read the files, try copying the files and making a new disk.

Those can work well, but if the problem is a top scratch, they won't do anything in this case.

Isnt buying it off ebay kind of illegal then too?, u guys arent making any sense, and sharing the game with others when its already very hard to find because its not being made anymore will encourage a larger amount of people to play the game and know what its all about, I dont mind burning one and sending it to anyone if they need just 1 disk from a game they already have..

It's not our game to share though. When you make a game from scratch, you're more than welcome to spread it around if you think that's what's best. How in the world could buying a game off eBay be "kind of illegal" in this context? That the least sense making thing I've heard in this thread.

Sounds about right. I'm surprised they agreed to do it at all actually. However, for $19 you can get a whole fresh copy of the game from eBay.
