After many trials and tribulations, I've managed to get it to run more-or-less perfectly. Since many people seem to have problems with this, I'm sharing this publicly. Hopefully it's a universal solution.
1) Set WING2.EXE to run in Windows 98/ME compatibility mode.
2) Reboot Windows XP into 'Directory Services Restore Mode' ( by pressing F8 during bootup, etc ). This functions very much like Safe Mode, except that it seems to give you all of the necessary audio and video capabilities for gaming.
The game should work without a hitch now, playing exactly like WC1:KS.
