I have recently tried running WC2 in XP SP2 (played through WC1, which had no problems when set to Windows 95 compatibility, even with Secret Missions 1 & 2), and I am running into some annoyances. I say annoyances because the game is still mildly playable (not great, but not bad, and it's still Wing Commander so I cope), but if possible I'd love it to be perfect. Here are my symptoms:
1) The music/sound effects crackle fairly often and repeat sometimes (i.e. stuttering with repeated words).
2) Cut scenes without speech are hyperspeed (which actually is okay, albeit comical, for anything other than the death sequence, which is nearly instantaneous). Cut scenes with speech are actually fine (perfect pace, sound is clear).
3) Battles in space seem stunted. Maybe WC2 always played "slower" than WC1, but it seems like flights are much more deliberate but sometimes you can crash and die much more easily. This is less important, though; it's at least livable (although I seem to die a lot more often in a Broadsword than I remember from the old 386 days ).
4) Wing2.exe always crashes when exiting the program. No idea why. It doesn't affect anything (no corruption of saved games or anything like that), but...
5) Sporadic crashes, occasionally in-flight. Not often enough to be a major proble, but annoying.
Anyone have any ideas for how to solve these? Win95 vs. Win98 compatibility mode seems to not make a difference, although both are much better than not having compatibility mode set. Also, turning hardware acceleration for sound down in dxdiag seems to help, although not solve, the sound issues (i.e. without turning it down the sound is unbearable instead of merely annoying).
Thanks!
