WC1 questions. You're going to laugh.

Flashfire

Spaceman
Okay, I was rooting through my old computer disks and I came across my Wing Commander 1 disks. Feeling nostalgic, I decided to install it on my computer and take a flight through Memory Lane. Anyway, I ran across two problems. One, the game runs way too fast. Two, I can't get sound support. I went to the good folks at #wing-commander, and someone uploaded Mo'Slo to me. Mo'Slo worked fine the first few times, but now it cuts out because Windows ME brings up a dialog box asking to create a short-cut. Also, the five options in INSTALL.EXE for sound are No Sound, Computer Speaker Only, AdLib, Sound Blaster, and Roland. I have a Crystal SoundFusion sound driver. I tried every option for sound. No sound came from any sound card choice except Roland, which crashed my computer each try. Is there any way I can play WC1 in its former glory? Maybe a patch or something? Or should I just break down and buy the Kilrathi Saga? If so, can anyone tell me where I can get it?

Thanks for listening, all. I would greatly appreciate it if you emailed me replies at CrasherNET@home.com. Thanks!

Welcome Flashfire !!

first try to play with a bootdisk in DOS, and later install (if you know) the Sound Cards drivers for DOS, otherwise buy KS....if you can find it!!! :)

Hi Flashfire... I have the same problems here and I have a SB Live! card.
I bet your sound card should be a 100% SB compatible.
Maybe, just maybe there is a sort of SB emulation programme to be found for just these kinds of troubles that fools old games into thinking they're working with a real SB card instead of a 100% compatible card.
Does any of the techies have any ideas? I'd suggest starting to rummage on www.download.com or try a SB discussion forum. The URL would be a great place to find another programme instead of MoSlo. I used Snail for a long time but I cannot find that anywhere anymore.
Having original packages of WC1,2&3 has kept me from buying KS until now, but as a collector's item and due to the stress of trying to play WC1&2 I'm also inclined to hang down my head and roam around on software auctions.

Good luck.. we're both gonna need it

Most cards these days should be 100% Sound Blaster compatible though - I seriously can't think of any that aren't.

"reading is an Art"

True, akashra, but the trick is in letting the old game believe it's working with a real Soundblaster, and downwards compatibility somehow stops at SB16

"100% SB Compatible" depends entirely on if you have the drivers loaded... what you want to do (Flashfire, if you have a SBLIVE-VALUE, and anyone else who can find their sound card drivers) is to enter

SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 H5 P330 T6
C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\SBLIVE\DOSDRV\SBEINIT.COM

in your autoexec.bat file. This should (someone please correct me if im wrong!) define your SB varibles (important that those are correct!) and then initialize your card to those variables. The SBLive series does have full SB16 emulation (which actually works better than an AWE32 card with any of the old games - no ambient noice, bugs, or any such problems.)

Both Sound Blaster and AdLib should be working; perhaps you need a driver update. I believe the drivers for your card can be found at http://www.cirrus.com/Drivers/audiodrv/index2.cfm. You'll need to figure out which specific chip you have; it should be listed in the Device Manager somewhere. It should look like CS####. I'm not seeing any DOS drivers, though; perhaps they're included with the Win3.11 release.
