WC1 "Please Insert Disc 18"

Hello all.
I've been trying and trying, literally for years, to get my Wing Commander Deluxe Edition to run on anything newer than Dos.
I happened upon your Tech Support on your main site, and set about getting Dosbox, performing a manual installation (because it kept prompting me to copy it from some directory, and then not even giving me a chance to actually type any directory in) and tried to play the game.
The instant I try to begin the game, it pops up saying "Please Insert Disc 18, press any key to continue."

I am running Windows 7 64bit. I have copied all the files to a directory on C. I have created the .cfg file to place in the folder, and I have used DosBox to mount C and try to play. Alternatively, I've tried to run the game directly off the CD, but that comes up with the same message.

I've also tried actually using the Install.exe, both on the CD and off, but these both end with either the Origin CD installer telling me to find the DOS utilities, or the Wing Commander installer getting to the point where in the corner it says "Copying Game, please wait..." forever and a box saying "Copy game from which directory?" with a blinking indicator... which doesn't actually allow me to type anything.

Anyways, I'm at my wits ends with all of this, I just want to play this great game, and I'm wondering if anyone out there has any way of pointing me in that direction!

Thanks!

those installers are finicky - my copy of wc1 deluxe cd is on a best sellers pack - but basically it has a wc1 sm1 and sm2 hidden folder on the cd, mount each one as a drive in dosbox and then install from there, when it asks for the drive letter type the relevant one

so, if in windows your cd drive is d

mount c c:\dosgames
mount d d:\wc1
mount e d:\sm1
mount f d:\sm2

do the installs in order and when prompted enter d e or f as required - bingo :)

Well, mine doesn't work exactly like that, it actually has an origin folder first, but I tried doing as you said and mounting each of the folders as I went along, and I still go zippo. In fact, this time it ended up saying that running d:\origin\wc\install.exe was an illegal command. I'm guessing it couldn't figure out the mounting and refused to run the install.

Still need help with the Disc 18 junk.

Are there alternate install files in the WC1 directory? On the WC2 CD there's an alternate installer that only adjusts the audio settings instead so you can just copy the cd to the harddrive and run the game with minimal hassle

It's likely a mounting problem. It would help us if you told us exactly where all the .exes are located on your disc/hard drive and then exactly what all you are typing to mount each drive.

I had the same problem! It's definitely a mounting problem in DOSBox! You have to use the correct parameters when mounting your CD/DVD drive in DOSBox.

mount v x: -t cdrom

Where as "v" is the drive letter you want DOSbox to use for your CD/DVD drive and "x" is your actual CD/DVD drive letter in windows. Once you mount your drive with these parameters, your install should work fine!
