I saw this on a newsgroup:

"Actually, I have had speed problems with both WC 1 & 2 of KS version. I didn't
even know that it was playing too fast until I read in WCNews's chat zone how
to tweak the original wc1 to run at the intended original speed using sm2.exe.
When I did this I experienced the "Original" Wing Commander, for the very first
time - better than Kilrathi Saga, better than PC Gamer June 2000 Classic Games
CD! Gee, it was not until mission 9 that I first got blown up! Unfortunately,
WC2 runs a little fast on both versions - that, or it is just a faster game. I
suspect that the Kilrathi Saga WC 1 & 2 were actually defective, too-fast
versions...that, or maybe the speed-up was intentional. I just know that I did
not understand when I read someone complaining that KS ran too fast on their
system until that tweak."

I'm pretty sure mine is too fast, and I couldn't find the tweak on here. Anyone know what it is?

BTW I'm using Windows XP.

WC2 runs like shit too. Skipping sound, way too fast when no one is talking, and way too slow in actual missions.

I'm running it on Win98 combatability mode. Tried Win95 and got really bad mouse lag.

Is there anyway I can test and see if it's running to fast?

Like how often does the water drip in the barracks? Mine goes about every .8 seconds I think.

There isn't an absolute speed that it should run out.. but it's around there. .8 seems fast, but that should be an acceptible speed.

If it runs too fast, use a simple slowdown program like Turbo.

The most simple way to get an accurate speed reading IMHO is to target some static object, and fly towards it. If you fly at 300kps and the object is 3000 km away, it should take you 10 seconds to get there.

The speeds and distances don't sync up until Prophecy. You should be able to clear 3000 klicks faster than ten seconds at 300 kps in WC1 at an otherwise reasonable play speed. Recording drops in the bucket over time or some such is better.

you use Dosbox on the KS WC1?

No, no, the original WC1. I had a Win95 Machine for KS, but the hard disk went down some time ago. But I always had the impression that KS WC1 was harder than my DOSboxed original. Now I know why.. ;)

You could also try adjusting the in-game framerate to speed up or slow down the KS: WC-1.

How do I adujst in-gane frame rate?
(I Have KS, and reinstalled WC1, but can't find the key to change the framerate)

For any one who's interested - I found it - Ctrl-m/n increases/decreases (not necesserly in this order) frame-rate from 8 to 32 fps. From my expirence 14 fps give the closest result to the original WC1.
