WC Prophecy keeps crashing back to Windows 98se...

Hi there folks, you guessed it, I'm a newbie on the board and I have a question, so given this if you'll bear with me I'd be most appreciative.

Anyway the problem is this, I'm trying to get Prophecy running one of my fathers computer (I've already clocked it :-) and everything runs fine until he either completes a mission or gets killed, after which more often than not the game crashes back to windows 98 and gives an error message of 'dinput::fetch2 fell out of loop'

Any ideas?

The system specs are: - Pentium 233 MMX CPU
- AWE 64 Soundcard
- 32 MB TNT 2 Video Card (currently running on a Detonator 3 version 10:50 driver)
- Sidewinder Pro 3D Joystick
- 24 speed cd rom drive
- 160 MB Ram

All of the background apps are turned off (including virus protection) and I've tried a couple of different video card drivers as well as tweaking the video card options and stuff but it's got me beat, so any advice you could give would be great.

Before coming here to hound you good folks for an answer to my problem I first tried Origin's site, I checked the FAQ here and then I read back through a months worth of messages (during which I discovered that the search feature had been disabled for understandable reasons so that ruled that option out), so believe me when I say that you guys are my last hope, and any and all help (successful or not) will be extremely welcome. Even if you can't help I thank you all for your time in at least reading this, and here's wishing you all a great day.

In my experience, that error message is indicitave of a failing or faulty joystick. Try playing the game without a joystick, or with a new one. That may fix your problem. If you suspect it isn't the joystick, check its connection with the sound card. Failing that, replace the joystick or play without one.

Check/Reinstall DirectX drivers
Prophecy uses DirectX5. Most problems are related to DirectX incompatibility, so try here first. Look for any versions that do not read 4.05 or above. If a component is not certified, but is 4.05 or higher, then this is OK. Prophecy may even work with a component which reads version 4.03, depending upon the particular piece of hardware.

MS Sidewinder Pro:
As a last resort, try setting it up as a CH Flightstick Pro. To do this, first enable CH FSPro on the joystick by moving the switch on the bottom to the "one dot" position. Afterward, change the "sidewinder" entry in game controllers to "CH Flightstick Pro" (In Windows'95a, switch the joystick type in Control Panel). After calibrating and setting up the joystick in Windows '95, go into Prophecy and set it up as a CH FSPro via the Options menu.

Well, the error is obviously with the game's comflictions with an input device. It's either the mouse or the joystick. Mine use to kick me to WinME the moment I tried playing it and it was because of my mouse drivers, which I later changed from the Logitech specifics to generic MS mouse ones.
