I bought a Creative DVD & mpeg card bundle back in -98, and got a WC IV DVD.

I though I would play it on my current computer, but I'm getting an error msg:
VirtualProtect() failed.
when I try to start it.

Does anybody know how to get it to work, or do I need to have the mpeg card installed for it to work?

My Computer:
Windows 2000 SP3
WinDVD for DVD viewing
GeForce 3
AMD 1900+
Epox 8KHA+

While I don't recognize the error (usually you get a movie not found one) there is no way to see the movies in game without the hardware MPEG2 card.
Does the game play on your machine besides the movies or is it a crash to windows? If the latter something else might be wrong as well.

It crashes directly after I dbl-click on the WC IV icon (on desktop).

(So the game doesn't start at all)

I watched the intro sequence with windvd, after I had tried to get it to work, and I got a clear picture.

Well, I guess I have to try the CD version, though I despise all the CD swaping, some time. Or maybe set up my oldest PC to play it with, it's just collecting dust now...

It's a shame that EA doesn't release a DVD compilation of the WC games, and as an extra bonus release the WC III with full 24 bit colours, I would certainly buy it.

It might be a shame EA doesn't do many things, but that's because it's not profitable for them. At least not at present. And what do you mean WC3 with 24-bit colour depth? Why only WC3, and what would be the point, given that nothing in the original game would go anywhere near that many colours?

IIRC, they (then-Daylight) proposed a DVD version of Kilrathi Saga a few years back, but EA wasn't interested... they supposedly could have done WC3 with better videos (from the original master tapes or somesuch -- but they wouldn't look as good as WCIV's film stuff)...

With EA's recent renewed interest in WC, who knows (G)

I meant the movies in WC III should be released in 24 bit colours, as I'm sure they weren't filmed in 256 colors (or whatever they used) in WC III.

I'd also want to know what kind of renewed interest EA has in WC, I've not heard about it.

DVD/MPEG-2

SO there isnt ANY way to play WC4 w/o a hardware decoder? I mean there should be a software decoder someone could have made one? It dosnt seem impossiable.

if u have one that work e-mail it to zellos@arzynik.com plz

A lot of people have tried.. but there really hasn't been a reliable way to do it.

Renewed interest? Are you referring to WCP GBA, or something else?

Nope.. EA doesn't really have anything to do with Prophecy Advance.

ARG... I want to play it!

ARG.

About 5 years ago, I bought a Creative PC-DVD 5x kit... about 3 years ago, I decided to use the DVD-ROM portion of it, so I've had its DVD-ROM drive in my computer for ages.

Yes, the kit came with the Dxr2 decoder board, but I only had it in the computer for a day (playing around with it). But it screwed up my monitor and sound so I removed it.

Of course, when I installed it, I did briefly insert the WCIV DVD that came with it, but never got it to run. Feeling bored on the weekend, I rewatched the WC DVD (movie, not WCIV), and remembered about the DVD in the PC-DVD kit. Dug that out, and you know what happened!

GRR.

OK, I got bored again, and browsed the CD - found the VOB folder, and played some videos using WinDVD4... now I really want to play it! DAMN!

Looks like no way to play it... other than to install the Dxr2 card again and boot into Win98.

BTW, the WCIV DVD I have only has the play guide - I saw reference to an install guide, but can't find it on the DVD anywhere. Also, isn't there any sort of 'background introduction' manual to help me figure out the story so far?

ARG x 2

Geez. Thought that I was going to do my backups and reboot my machine, I'd go into Windows 98 to play it.

Installed WinDVD 2000, and the opening video plays perfectly. However, at the end, it just hangs (black screen), until I hit Esc, at which points I get the options "Help him out" or "Straighten him out". Then I get the next video, and after it finishes... nothing. I can hit Esc to get to the next devision point, but I'd miss the video in between. Annoying!

Damn - does this game also not work in Win98? Or do I really need to install my Dxr2 card and drivers in order to get it to play perfectly?

You need the DXR2 card and probably a different system then Win XP.

Well, all I really needed was proper MCI drivers - after all, the video does play, just has issues (the problem playing the next video scene, etc).

Anyhow, this system runs Win2k most of the time. I suppose if necessary I can rig up a VMWare system, but it would suck at 3D... (it's a decent enough machine, by no means a very fast one, either, but it does its job).

But I guess I'll install the Dxr2 card one of these days - just hate the thought of its subpar video and audio quality... (Time to hunt around for old DVD drivers...)
