WC CD install dilemma...

I have both WC Deluxe and WC2 Deluxe on CD, and I have a dilemma on my hanz. I would like to install both 'permanently' on my HDD (so that it plays from the HDD and doesn't have to even utilize the CD), but the install programs (particularly for WC2) won't let me do so; it only uses the HDD for settings and savegame storage.

Any hints on how I might do this?...
(For what it's worth, the WC1 CD also has both sets of secret missions and "Ultima VI" on it; I think it was some sorta limited promotional deal, maybe released with a particular CD drive or something...)

By way of a tip for you WC1 players out there, there's a DOS program available called "Neverlock" that fixes it so you don't need to type the answer to a WC trivia question to enter the game. it's available at:

Well, I don't have that version of the game right in front of me, but (assuming that it's possible) I'd guess that it would be similar to the way Privateer and Righteous Fire can be made to run off the hard drive.

Oookay, Thx.
...Prob is, I don't know how to do THAT either... Care to share your technique? :)

All you need to do is copy PRIV.TRE and RF.TRE into your Privateer directory and then edit your PRIV.CFG and RF.CFG files so that they point to the new paths for the files.

I don't expect either Wing Commander I or II to be utilizing files that large from the CD, but I suspect that there is some sort of configuration file in there somewhere that's telling the game to check the CD drive for something. If it can be found, it can be edited similar to the way we edited Privateer's configuration file. This is, of course, all conjecture, but at least you now know how to run Privateer and Righteous Fire from your hard drive.

I'm probably not going to be able to do much more than that. I'm looking at The Kilrathi Saga and most of its files are encrypted.

However, TC just offered another possibility. Try copying the entire CD to your hard drive first, then install it from there.

WildWeasel about the Privateer -with no Cd play- you said.

I did that to Righteous Fire and works from HDD but Privateer doesnt! It still wants the CD......

The Priv.tre is copied to the HDD and I have edited correctly the
Priv.cfg with the new path ....
any IDEA ?

If you want Righteous Fire to play from your hard drive, you have to copy RF.TRE and edit RF.CFG. If you want Privateer to play from your hard drive, you have to copy PRIV.TRE and edit PRIV.CFG. Make sure you're copying and editing the correct files.

Actually, that was the very FIRST thing I tried:

"Preacher reporting no joy..."

...But I think you may be barking up the right tree with the 1st idea you had. I'll look into it when I get a chance. Thx 4 sharing.

Playing WC1/2 (DOS version, at least) from the HD is simple. Just copy each game into its own directory, reset all the files' attributes so that only 'archive' is on (ie remove the 'read-only' attribute), and play from the HD.
