Voodoo3 PCI + Gf 4MX

Edfilho

Cry some more!
What would happen if I plugged my old Voodoo3 3000 pci in a vacant PCI slot? Would it work? Would I be able to choose which board to use? I also have a spare 15" monitor, besides my 17" one. I use WinXP.
The reason why I ask this here is that I wanna play Prophecy and some other Glide games.

Hm... Voodoo 3 isn't just an add-on card anymore, is it? I suppose you could at least keep the two cards in the same motherboard, but the screen needs to be connected to the main card somewhere along the line. I don't know how kindly a monitor takes to be reconnected just like that...

It works but it won't play 3dfx games. Not out of the box anyhow.
Windows only allows for the primary card to do 3D, the secondary will only do 2D (but you can use it for multi screen fun).
If your motherboard/BIOS supports it you can chance the display init sequence however between PCI and AGP. Thus you can switch WHICH card will be primary in the BIOS. Of course this needs a reboot everytime.

Lastly you'll either need 2 screens, a screen that can support 2 graphic cards, a VGS switch box or you just manually change the VGA cable between the two cards every time you change the primary card.

So yeah - it is definitely doable, just a bit uncomfortable.

(says the person that has 3 graphic cards in his machine and does just what he described above)

Yeah, if you have an open pci slot and an extra monitor, there's no reason not to put them together.

Great, I do have both the slot and the extra monitor... But to play Glide games from the Voodoo I'll have to reboot, then... humm.. Would it mess with my WinXP desktop settings? Anyway, it would be cool to have the double screen anyway. And I've seen the option to pick the default board (AGP vs PCI) on the BIOS before.

If I installed Win98 in a FAT32 partition, it would be possble to run Dos/glide games and WinXP DirectX/OpenGL games from the same pc, right? all it would take would be a reboot... I hope it works.

Well I dunno about XP, but Win98SE works just fine, no messing up the desktop. One small word of warning however: If you do 2 monitors NEVER place the 2nd one to the LEFT of the 1st (in the windows setting that is). Also top is bad IIRC. In that case there is a good chance that the icons will be placed around randomly on that one (Windows seems to assume thet the top leftmost screen is the main one.
