Trojan IV Naval Yard Gets Busy (July 12, 2011)

Malcolm Reynolds has started an awesome paper model project. These first pictures show off the flight deck runway of his new Tiger's Claw design. It's looking fairly large for a physical model. The source art comes from bits and pieces of Howard Day's gorgeous 3D Bengal. Let Malcolm know what you think at the Forums. We can't wait to see this one come together!

Hey everybody, thought you might be interested in following my construction of a papercraft version of the TCS Tiger's Claw. I'm basing it on Howard Day's amazing Bengal render, in fact, I'm using his meshes to skin the model. Basically, I printed out the one texture map I could find of his Bengal and then I edited, re-sized and refit it so that I could print it out, mount it on thin cardboard and hopefully create some facsimile of a decent model.

Wow! This is really awesome. Is there anything I can do to help?
I love where it is so far - especially the little fighters parked in the landing and catapult slots. Very neat. :D

Howard!

You should know that you're one of my heroes for creating that amazing Bengal. This project would be impossible without you.

As to how you can help:

If you have any other texture maps from the Bengal besides the one you already made available, I'd love to see those. Especially if you have the texture maps for those turrets, because otherwise I'm probably just going to improvise something crappy.

Also, if you could think about maybe whipping up a name plate/designation for the side of Claw that would be awesome. If not, I'll make one my self, but yours would probably be better. I'm planning on doing a white text on both the grey and the green pattern from your model and then just placing it wherever it looks good.

I'll post more pics of the build once I make some progress. :)

Update

Hey everybody,

Here are a few pic's of my ongoing build of the TCS Tiger's Claw. It may not look like much has been done since I last posted but I've built in a lot of support structures and started to really assemble the model. I've had to do some cheating to make everything fit, but hopefully it will all start to come together.

Anyway, in these few pics you can see me add on to the flight deck and landing strip step by step.

Tiny Update: Finished the front of the Claw, sorry for the horrible resolution in the pic's here, my regular camera is out of commission. There's also an early rendition of the Tiger's Claw Registration number, but I'll clean it up a lot before I apply it to the model. What do you think of the placement and color of the Reg #? Too big or too small? Bad Location?

I'm also trying out some new fonts for the nameplate, designation number, ect. Anybody know the name of the font used in the banner for the Wing Commander CIC website?

Designation Number

Here's a pic of the designation number mounted on the Bengal's runway. Not true to the game, but where I think it looks best. Also I've posted two possible nameplate images for the Claw, one against green hull paint and one against white. Which ones look best and where should they go? Opinions?

Incidentally, what the hell does CVS stand for? (Other than the pharmacy of of course;))

Whoops? This look better? Anybody know the difference between CV and CVS?Or what they even stand for? I'm assuming Confederation --------- Ship or something, but then again it's already the TCS Tiger's Claw, which is Terran Confederation Ship...Right?

Confused.

Much better!

"CV" is the (real) naval designation which means 'aircraft carrier'. The different versions mean different kinds--CVE is escort carrier, for example. In real life 'CVS' was a submarine hunting aircraft carrier... but it seems to mean dreadnaught in WC.

(The actual meaning of the acronym has become confusing over the years, but is now tradition. The 'C' means Cruiser and the V means heavier-than-air craft.)

You sure had that information quickly LOAF :p

I have to add a few things.

Following the Washington Naval Conference, C was also used to designate Carriers by the major powers that signed the treaty.

WC uses CV, CVS, CVA, CVE and CVX. The only one that's difficult to rectify is CVS since it's used for the Concordia seen in WC2.

That Concordia certainly wasn't a support carrier though. Joan's calls it a Dreadnaught so maybe Super Carrier could be the translation of CVS but Confed uses it to represent fighter carrying ships with heavier anti-ship weaponry. Or it could be something else entirely.

Thanks LOAF! And it's in CIC font. Incidentally, what does LOAF stand for?

I think that's still classified. :)

WC uses CV, CVS, CVA, CVE and CVX. The only one that's difficult to rectify is CVS since it's used for the Concordia seen in WC2.

There's also a 'CVN', sort of--the "CS Tiger Claw" hats given to people who worked on the Wing Commander movie say "Tiger Claw CVN 2654" on them.

That Concordia certainly wasn't a support carrier though. Joan's calls it a Dreadnaught so maybe Super Carrier could be the translation of CVS but Confed uses it to represent fighter carrying ships with heavier anti-ship weaponry. Or it could be something else entirely.

It is a good question. My gut says it's not super carrier, since the Vesuvius is just plain 'CV'... so I lean towards it referencing either that she's a dreadnought in general or specifically that she carries a 'super weapon' (the Phase Transit Cannon).

First time I saw the name I thought it stood for Low On Afterburner Fuel.

And I think the black on white name looks better
