The Hardest Missions!

Of the pre-FMV games, Kurasawa 2 (the dreaded "Ralari rescue"), easily. Someone must have switched out that destroyer's armor with paper mache, with how easily that Ralari goes down to Gratha guns. Not detouring around the roid field gets you the fun of tangling with Salthis in the rocks, but even cheating by manually flying around the asteroids you're not given the easiest of tasks.

For the FMV games, there's a few tough ones, but I think "Outrun Ella" is probably one of the bigger pains in the ass, especially if you don't fly the munchkinmobile (Dragon).

None of the rest really stick out in my mind at the moment.

I think the Ella mission is definitely up there. In a Dragon it's pie, but with let's say a Banshee or Bearcat on Hard, you will definitely lose your wingman (Maniac usually lasts longest) and you will also probably die, haha. I really don't enjoy plinking away at Hellcat tail for 2 minutes each...

I don't really have a big problem with Kursawa 2. There's only four attacking Gratha. The Ralari has one surviving escort when you arrive. You tell Bossman to attack a target, and there's two ships left for you to deal with. Beat up whichever one is pointing at the Ralari, and you should be able to hold steady. I beat it about 50% of the time. You're in a Rapier too, which isn't too bad. Now some of those Secret Missions missions really get me. Massive fleets in a Hornet.

Some of the Sabre bombing missions in Special Operations are pretty rough. If you fly that one WC3 mission drunk it's terribly difficult. Comm Station defense in Prophecy is very hard if you're not constantly watching the nav map to see what ship is targeting the relay. Armada Gauntlet is a big chore if you don't have the password patch.

NO NO NO NO NO!! I have my two!

In Super Wing Commander (3DO), you have to fight the TCS Gwynnevar (Spelling!) I've never been able to destroy the damn thing because I'd either be completely out of ordinance, or so heavily damaged from all the previous fighting that ONE BOMBING RUN IS SUICIDAL! I'm barely able to take out the escort Rapiers around it!

The second is the spying mission in Super Wing Commander where you are in a Dralthi surrounded by Snakiers... hard... BECAUSE I SO WANTED TO KICK SOME SERIOUS CAP SHIP ASS and wound up getting yelled at by the Colonel for blowing up 4 of them! BWAHAHAHAHA!

Really? Thrakhath's taunt "Not much of a challenge, are you?" should really be turned on him...
The Drakhai Sartha are slightly more interesting, although if you keep turning you're pretty safe anyway.

The ending missings in Special Operations 1, however, is an entirely different kettle of fish.

The hardest I've come across recently are probably the save the Ralari one, I tried and tried and tried and still lost it.

The other is probably the third mission in WC2, no matter how hard i try, the broadswords are still killed.

wing commander 4, you have the choice of trying to slip past the station or blow it to smithereens, blowing it was easy, slipping past took so much work, it was one heck of a fight. But for the life of me i cant remember my best loadout or fighter for it.

I second Chris's mention of the Comm Station mission in Prophecy. That one gave me problems. The other one in WC:p was the protect the transports in G'wriss. I don't remember WHY it was so difficult but I remember watching that Pelican blow up quite a few times.

I also remembering having issues with the sensor blackout missions in WC4 - but I think that was more that the missions took longer than usual than them being outright difficult to finish.

The Ralari mission in WC2 is a given.

LMAO...EXACTLY! I never really understood just why Thrakhath was so easy to beat, considering he was supposed to be always flying the baddest fighter the Kilrathi produced. (Bloodfang? How about Bloodly Defanged?) I never had much of a problem with killing the station at the end. The easiest way to always...ALWAYS...get your torpedoes past the Kilrathi flak was to bore in on full afterburner and launch when you're close. At that point, you can go, "Point defense? What's that...?" Oh sure, your shields and armor can take a beating with a few lucky flak hits, but if you kick the burners in at just the right moment, it's nothing more than red flashes, and it always seemed like the station's gunners could never really get a handle on you from there. They could bore in on a moving target, but not a FAST moving target.

I've always had a bugger of a time trying to defend the Midway from having some part of her critical systems blown away and having the BitchingBetty come out and declare "Mission Failed" when I'm killing bugs as fast as I possibly can has always frustrated me...that's during the convoy rescue which can never be rescued because, "The bugs were just toying with them until you got here". Just trying to keep the Midway from getting hit too many times from all sides and NOT hearing "Mission Failed" is probably the biggest challenge that I can think of offhand.

You only have to go after the Skate-Ts, joined Stingrays (and unjoined ones, if given enough time, IIRC), red Mantas, and Devil Rays to protect the Midway, as they're the only ones with plasma weaponry that can harm capship components.

My biggest nightmare missions are still in SM1. #2 is the first sighting of the Sivar. Too many Jalthis there. Guess what #1 could be... You fly a Raptor. Against Rapiers...

... because it's a scripted event that can't be avoided, perhaps?

Port Hedland #1 I found to be incredibly tough. I've not tried to replay it since I figured out what was the winning track to Wing Commander 1 but maybe for nostalgia I should. You have to escort a Drayman carrying entertainment for the troops back to Claw...first rescuing it from 4 Jalthi and then later another three Gratha! All the time you're in a Scimitar...its super is tough. I never beat it back then. WC1 had some absolutely awesome missions on the losing track though, I should go through and replay those.

I meant that I played the level repeatedly and remember seeing that cutscene over and over.

Yes, and that's exactly my point. Even while ignoring all other fire from the straight fighters trying to take my wing out, there are a LOT of them to take out. Out of all the times I've played through the game, I think I may have heard "Mission Accomplished" twice...and I've played through the game quite a bit.

Devil Rays...*cold shiver*

the T-Bomb run in wc3 ! thats the only mission in the wing commander games ive played that i havnt finished without cheats :(
