Sister ships

Seventh Part of the Seal
I know we're all probably getting sick of my Star Trek Threads, so this'll be the last one for a while, I promise.

I just went back over a few things. I was just wondering if anyone knew if there was some sort of tradition surrounding the names Potempkin and Hood?

Why do I ask?

Because these two ships seem to do EVERYTHING together:

The original Potempkin and Hood were both Constitution class ships that were part of the force sent against the M-5 machine. Both took heavy damage in that battle supporting the Lexington.

The next two ships bearing these names were both Excelsior class.

Commander Riker served on both ships.

Both ships served in Picard's Blockade during the Klingon war.

Both served in the same fleet during the Dominian War.

Finally, I believe both ships were part of the fleet. That was set to intercept the Scimitar during Nemisis.

I don't think there's any historical connection -- they're both famous historical battleships, but were not related in any way. If Star Trek puts them together in TNG so frequently then it's a reference to TOS rather than anything else (although I really don't recall hearing them spoken in the same breath so often.)

I was not sure about this, so I go and checked it...

- only the Hood was part of the blockade during the klingon war, the ship was part of the tachyon detection grid...

-both ship served during the war against the dominion, but I found no clue of a service inside the same fleet (the Potemkin was in the 9th fleet, the Hood was seen in the Chin'toka-System on "Tears of the Prophets...), but there was no mention of these ships together...

Well, I think the creators of Star Trek loves homages on the Classic series and they also loves to play with famous names...
For instance: the U.S.S. Hornet fought a bitter war against the Akagi on WW II, in the Trek-universe both ships fly side by side on the tachyon-grid...

PS: sorry for this nitpicking, but I'm still an old and nasty trekkie... :D;)
