SAGA Mod just mentioned in Belgian/Dutch gaming Magazine!

Yeah, I just played some FS2 this today... One of my own homemade mission were the player in a bomber, escorted by two wingmen have to soften up a Shivan destroyer so that a Hecate can jump in and deal with it. The space combat part is pretty awesome, no doubt about that.

That reminds me of another area where Freespace definitely stood out, the mission editor.

What difference would it make what kind of website you're running? Elitist attitudes are always bad. I should know, as I have one --but it is something I'm trying to fix.

Good luck, I kind of doubt you'll make it before you earn a vacation again.

There aren't many Freespace fans left on these forums because they got into giant flamewar-type arguments and got banned or left.

Almost every person who got banned in any sort of Freespace argument has posted to Crius.net in the last month.

I think it would be pretty close between Freespace, Wing Commander, and TIE Fighter. If I have some time I'll do so digging... could be interesting.

I'm not even talking about just space sim genre awards. There were a million of "best of all time" features that were spun out five years ago when Freespace 2 was fresh in everyone's mind. Both Freespace and Star Wars games were quite scarce. There were quite a few Wing Commander awards.

Heh, thanks for believing in me.

I know that can't be right. I'm thinking of about quite a while back, not recently.

You might be right, but Wing Commander seems to be a lot less well represented in more recent 'best of all time' features. Another thing to remember is that Freespace 2 wasn't a very popular game when it was released (just look at the sales figures) but has been rising in popularity from word of mouth as more and more people download and try it.

Blablablablabla blaaaaaaa blaaaargh blah.
jeez. The article didn't even say that they like freespace better they just said they found it the most spectaculair (and everyon who has seen that sun getting blown up in FS2 or those damn awesome beam weapons, tend to agree) Yes I still like Wing Commander more (and I happen to know they like wc more at the redaction of that magazine to)

Point is.. I found that it was funky that SAGA got mentioned in a DUTCH (witch has nothing to do with germans btw) Magazine.

Damnit peeps.. people are bound to have opinions :)

As a game, Freespace 2 simply was not "fun." I saw where gamespot gave Freespace 2 a 9.3 review when it came out and I nearly came out of my skull. Although I will admit there were some aspects of Freespace that were alright this game was no where near a 9 level rating. It had an absolutely horrible player plot (read nonexistant) and dubious game plot and extremely weak dialogue. The actual gameplay was decent (along the lines of Tie Fighter) but repetitive and without a good storyline the game felt like nothing more than a mission simulator. If I absolutely had to compare it to a Wing Commander title then I would compare it to Wing Commander Academy, the only difference being was that Academy you had to create the missions but other than that the two games were identical in that they lacked plot, dialogue and the "fun" longeveity factor. Both games got old extremely fast.

Speaking of repetitive... WC isn't innocent on that.. go to waypoint kill enemy, go to next waypoint, rinse and repeat.... etc...

Both games have the pros and con...

I did like the mission editor in both freespaces. I also enjoyed freespace one since it had a story about humans fending off a far superior enemy and trying to save Earth. Freespace 2 just didn't do it for me the story was all over the place and eventually lead to no where.

The main problem with the freespace games is that there is nothing memorable about them. I mean who has played it can look at a ship from the game and name its class off the top of their head. I know of a few since I made a couple of missions but most are forgetable. Also kinda sucked that guns on fighters where all interchangable.

Wing Commander had a better presentation over all. Better storys, ships, manuals and races. I still can't wait till Saga comes out since it will rectify alot of Freespaces downfalls.

(I hope they model all of the wing commander ships in there eventually)

The WC games had some real personality and made up for any repetetiveness in the gameplay. Plus there's the "gotta see the next cutscene" feeling you get. WCs focus isn't really on the space-combat IMO but the story.

Well as long as there's the "ESC" skip video it's all good. Course I really liked FS's ability to custom ship config before launch was a good feature.

Well both games had pros and cons: WC is better, as it has storyline that involved some characters, much better cutscenes, better ships, and so on, but in freespace you had somewhat better engine (newer at least), the mission editor that was real fun and much better ordering system for your wingmen (something i realy lacked in wc was ignore my target commnad)

This is the third time you've said something like this... I think people here would like you alot better if you didn't.

I really don't think so. Even dating back to the very beginning, everyone remembers all sorts of fancy missions. We have many threads about people's favorite missions or hardest missions, and people pull out all kinds of stuff from all over the series. Everyone here should have vivid memories of racing out to defend a Ralari in Kurasawa or being ambushed by Rapiers flown off the Gwenhyvar. In Wing Commander 2, you might go out on what seems like a routine patrol, but then get diverted off to rescue the Confederation's flagship. Nobody forgets the first time they flew drunk in Wing Commander 3 or Maniac challenging them to a duel in the first mission of Wing Commander 4. Even after the duel, the "boring" ride to home base was disrupted by a Confed starbase being obliterated in a fantastic cutscene. Shortly after that, you had to trail slowly behind pirates to follow them to their home base, and then missions started popping up where you got clues that the objectives might be illegitimate. There's just tons of unique and challenging missions.. and even the routine ones were more meaningful because there was a storyline reason to be doing them, and you flew with a wingmen with an actual personality that you interacted with.

I know I would prefer that type of comment be put on ice...

Yeah, and replying to someone's post with "blablablah" and then bitch about his opinions not being respected is extra silly.:)

Prohecy had more samey missions than Wc3 or Wc4. Wc4 I seem to remember having the most varied missions... (cant comment on 1 or 2 as I never played em)
