Regarding HLP...

Tolwyn

Vice Admiral
The dynamic server cluster has been compromised and has taken offline from
the network in light of this problem.

All accounts on these servers and the associated MySQL servers will be
changed. Your team will be notified of your new password when the change
is completed, and the servers are back online.

If you use the same password as your email or other GameSpy accounts, we
highly advise that you change those passwords also. If you need assistance
changing any information, please email XXX@gamespy.com and they will
be happy to assist you.

We apologize for the inconvenience and hope to have everyone back up and
running again soon.

Thank you,

I hope they get ride of these allways crashing Servers or at least find out and fix whatever causes the crashes in the past.

"Compromised" doesn't mean there was a server crash, it means someone broke into the server and stole everyone's account information.

From what I've heard the Gamespy hosting servers do have frequent stability problems. This latest issue would be something else entirely though. Now would probably be a good time to remind people not to share passwords between sites, or to at least use tiered passwords. Paypal or your online banking account would not be in the same tier as, say, a random web board. But it's worrying that Gamespy apparently store passwords in cleartext. That's probably the first thing they tell you not to do in any web development course.

Somehow it looked like only the HLP-Sub-domain was affected, because
gamespy, or better 3dactionplanet.com all all other hosted sites were online,
only the freespace-section was down.

But the problem has been gone way too long, I just say "extrem waiting times
while posting". I really hope they will fix this for sure . We are now in a much
advanced state of development, and these communications-blackout do
us no good :(

I hope no data gets lost.Just think of a crash of the other forum !!! :(

All our status-lists, to-do lists and bug-reports! It would really pain me if that get's lost ( and also my post-count, i was very close to my 2000th post celebration :) )

The GameSpy Network is geared towards Microsoft IIS/SQL/ASP (3dap). The UNIX
machines (Dynamic Servers) are standalone machines, so if you place your entire site on the unix machine and the machine goes down so does your site. The main GameSpy Network webserver (the one that serves the Planet* sites and their hosted sites) is a cluster of win2k machines, if one of the webservers in the cluster goes down, your site stays up.

Whatever the reason is the result is the same...no page, no forum.

Well... the *result* is a bit more serious in this case, which is that some person now has all of your passwords/contact information/etc.

If that is true, Tolwyn, you should change the passwords of the ftp and our database asap, just to prepare for the worst.

The dynamic servers were faced with a malicious attack and had to be
shut down. All passwords for the sites ran on these servers have been
compromised along with user information on forums, and other login services
you may have been running.
We are in the process of fixing the damage and the security flaw that was
exploited. As we repair the servers, we will be bringing them back online
one by one. Our estimated time of getting all the servers back online is by
or before Monday if all goes smoothly. Once a server is ready to come back
online, we will be providing you information on how to restore your account.
As a result of the attack, all your passwords and the passwords of your
readers should be considered compromised and you should change any passwords
on other servers that were similar to those on your dynamic and MySQL
accounts. Also the configurations of the servers will be somewhat altered,
and may cause the need for some applications to be reconfigured.
In the very near future I will be contacting the members in groups by server
about the next steps that we will be taking and need you to take and
information we may need from you to assist us in bringing your site back
online.
We understand that all this can be frustrating to you and your site
fans, and we appreciate the support and patience you have shown our support
and technical staff as we have worked to locate and fix all the problems we
have come across.

Hm, I received an old forum-notification, but still no forums visible on the main-page (and our password will not be the same I guess).

You may need to refresh the web page.

[EDIT] Doesn't matter it's down again. I think they just set up a new record.
