First I'd just like to say I'm having an awful time trying to read these forums. Many threads seem to have the first halves deleted from them, and there is no obvious searches. That aside--

Using the Win2k profecy patch, I am able to start the game fine. Once I am flying around in the first mission, I eventually get kicked out with a page fault. This has happened 2 of 2 times when someone was talking in the view screen (one before, one after you first see the alien ships).

Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a fix?

I have traced the problem to being when people speak/are heard over the intercomm during flight.

heh my prob with reading the forum was the upside-down styling of the thread. Never seen a thread like this before with the latest listed first.--- but anyway my problem still exists.

While someone is talking (and I can see the picture) over the comm, at certain places the game crashes. I could disable that, but that wont stop the "AARggghh!!!" comm that comes through sometimes when people die, which also causes a crash.

Anyone have an intelligent thought on this? I am using maximum install. I assume my NTFS isn't sscrewing it up

Nope I am running an nVidia Geforce 2 Go, but I am running in D3D mode anyway.

I tried copying my movie.tre (whatever the big one is called) to the WC5 directory, and it read it instead of the CD. I was able to go much farther distances in the game before it crashed.

Hmmm this really is odd. At first I thought maybe the game didn't liky the way my DVD did run-ahead.

Really weird part: I have Windows 98 installed as well. It works completely fine in it. I am almost never in 98 so I wanted it in 2k. What the heck is going on?

It's not an option for my DVD. I'll try playing out of the CDRW, but I expect the same results.

Didn't work :P

It is asking as if there is a problem reading the CD, but I've done it so that the movie file was on the harddrive, so the CD wasn't even spinning. And as I said, it works perfectly fine in Win98. ALMOST perfectly fine: The game is much laggier, and the mouse response time is annoyingly noticable.

What else is there? Some win2k service botching it up?

Doesn't matter whether I am in DirectX or Softwaremode. Grr I don't want to play in 98, it's choppy. What could be wrong with my video display in 2k in DirectX in WC5?

I've had the same problem. I dont know what to do. Hopefully a response will come.

The readme says the patch requires DirectX 8. Maybe older (or newer versions) don't work?

Why are you so sure Win98 will play it choppy? If all else fails, it might be worthwhile trying to get it working smoothly in Win98 rather than Win2000, since it's a Win9x game.

BTW, it's Wing Commander Prophecy (WCP) - there's no such thing as WC5. ;)

For clarity's sake. Do we have to argue about whether we include Academy, Privateer, and Armada in the series too? ;)

We obviously don't. They came out before Wing Commander IV, yet it's still considered the fourth game in the storyline series. Anyway, this isn't the place for this debate (which makes one wonder why you made such a debatable comment in this forum).

lol glad to see some more activity.

I am not _guessing_ that it runs choppy in Win98, I know it does. I have Win98 on here, I've played in it, and it's choppy. I swing the mouse left, the ship keeps going left for a bit. I fire, half the time nothing comes out, the other half more than one shot comes out from a tap.

hmm but that sure doesn't help :P

oh, and yes it's Wing Commander V :)
Would anyone consider "Hellfire" to be diablo 2? Of course not.

Now that that's straightened out... :)
