Progress Update #2

Thanks, Chris. I might need to scale the sizes of the engines back a bit...they might be too much. I gotta admit - it is sort of fun making a new ship, and not needing to worry about getting everything precisely lined up. Not that I didn't enjoy putting together the Bengal and Exeter - just it's good to do something more original every now and then. All thanks to NinjaLA's design!
Also, I just looked at my previous post - I didn't realize I was uploading only 800x600 images. Here are some larger ones. The last image (tolmacs15.jpg) is showing a slightly smaller engine set - any thoughts?

I think I like that better. Not having that one giant engine in the middle makes things seem a bit better proportioned.

I agree. but that is looking fantastic so far!

I am not worthy.. some day if I get to Eugene (likely since my sister lives there) you and I are gonna have to get together and jam.

as a side note- for the webcomic, you mind if I use this ship as my model in the future? instead of a bengal, I sort of like the idea of a jeep carrier being home base. Makes defending the ship seem a bit more urgent.

Do I mind? Absolutely not! I'll go ahead and put a version together for you - textures and all - but also one that's more cellshaded for reference. I would do it now, but it's not quite done. I'm actually considering removing the middle engine and making this thing look a little less spry. But that's just because you were calling it a jeep carrier. I don't recall those things being particularly quick. Anyhow, got an e-mail I can talk to you about this stuff further?

Okay, here's where I got to tonight. Still haven't touched the underside. It'll probably deal with that tomorrow. Enjoy, everyone - and let me know if there are any changes you'd like to see.
Oh, and a big-arsed top-down view...

ooh.. really digging the tower design. and I just noticed from the last set of renders.. that thing looks totally lethal from a straight head on perspective.

Both of these designs are fantastic! I especially like the carrier - how big is it?

On a sidenote: Howard, I'm still around if you want me to start writing up mission scripts and dialogue.

So, Joel asked me to post this. I've gotten a fair way along on the Exeter class Destroyer. Key points: the trip-laser battery, the small landing bay behind the bridge for the 18-strong fighter complement, and those two weird cylindrical things forward of the bridge. So, this will be done shortly - I just have some random tightening up to do. After this, I'd like to do NinjaLA's design:

With his permission. Ninja - any thoughts on length, scale, armament, whatever? There's no guarantee that it will end up in the game - but it is a pretty neat design. Call it the Tolmacsy class. :D If Ninja doesn't want me touching his baby, then the next up will probably be a Bonnie Heather type Free Trader.

Enjoy!

I made one of the Bengal ones my wallpaper

Wow it certainly looks like a light strike carrier that could hold its own against some smaller capships if the need arose.

Keep up the good work!

It looks to me like it would fit as some sort of cruiser/carrier--sort of like a Confed equivalent to the Fralthi, where it carries 30-40 fighters and has some anti-capship weaponry. Say, one squadron each of Hornets, Scimitars, and Raptors.

I dunno, that split hull design with the hanger in the middle scares me quite a bit. It seems like a dedicated heavy strike on the middle of the ship would split it right in half.

I think in a universe with antimatter torpedoes, it probably matters more to keep the dedicated attack from getting anywhere near your home base in the first place.

You're on the Pioneer team?

Yeah - about 18 months ago, I approached Howard looking for a job with the team. They said they needed something with scripts and storylines, and I put some stuff together that I showed Howard. But because they hadn't really gotten the engine together yet, the story stuff was put on hold. But now it seems to me that its time to get some storyline stuff working.

Here are some updates on the Tolmacs:

I had a long reply written for everyone, but the firefox browser threw it away, and I'm too pissed right now to re-write it. I'll calm down in a bit.

seeing it with those side guns and the turret on the bottom really puts it in perspective that this puppy has some teeth.. I think I'll call it a multi-role Cruiser instead of an Escort Carrier.
