Will someone please help. I have Wing Commander 3, 4, DVD4. I have a Compaq Presario PIII 850 with windows xp ESS Allegro sound. I have tried boot disks, compat modes, config.sys edits. I get the following errors on each game.

Wing Commander 3...Exception 13 happened.

Wing Commander 4 DVD...Error c:/vob. on movies otherwise game plays. Have DVD software from several companies.

Wing Commander 4...Sounds skips and pops.

These games are useless to me unless I find a fix

...well then, give it to me, cuz I have a drive & S/W, all I need is the Dxr2/3 card...

No, seriously: From what I've heard here, ya need a DVD drive AND one o' them (Dxr2/3/Hollywood) DVD *cards* in yer system to play the game.

DVD drive alone'll getcha admission to the movies, but "ya gots to pay to play" the game (i.e., get one of them cards first)

Anyone that wants all of the above will sell set and set only for 25.00 plus shipping. I am tired of fooling with them.

Crab, people, if you're not interested in helping somebody fix their problems *DON'T POST TO THE TECH SUPPORT ZONE*. You're not helping this poor guy...

Could you post your setup information? And soundcard type? We can probably figure something out for WC3 and 4... WC4 DVD requires a physical decoder card (a Hollywood Realmagic) to play.

I have Compaq Presario 850 PIII 256 ram running Windows XP with all kinds of bootdisks from bootdisk.com. My sound says ESS Allegro. I don't know what video card is. I will post a system read on here when I get home by using Belarc.com. Any chance anyone can help with an old DOS game called Star Trek A Final Unity. I get a DOS 4/GW error when trying to start the game.

Exception 13 in WC3... Hm, isn't that something about wrong sound setup? *Shrug* If you can dig up ESS' homepage (harder than it sounds, believe me) - maybe www.ess-tech.com or something close to it - they should be able to tell you what kind of Sound Blaster-generation it's compatible to. Like Sound Blaster Pro, 16, AWE, etc. If you had Win9x, you would be able to see the settings during start-up, at least if they made the Allegro's TSR like the Maestro-2's.

As for the DOS 4GW, you need to have a file called dos4gw.exe in the game-directory. If you have some other DOS-games, I'm sure one of them has it somewhere. If not, I'll be damned if I can't find it somewhere on my HD.

Your life may be made much easier if you look into a program called VDMSound. Wc3, wc4, and Final Unity are all DOS games, and the ESS card you have is Directsound only as I recall. XP has rudimentary DOS sound support through emulation, and it works fine for many people- but those people usually have a card made by Creative Labs. VDMSound is an open source DOS sound emulator which works quite a bit better. I don't have a link handy, but if you look around this form you should find it. Alternatively, you may want to also lower hardware acceleration- which works for WCP.

For the Final Unity issue... We took a call on that once. As I recall, the solution was to add buffers=20 and files=99 to the c:\windows\system32\config.nt folder.

Hope this helps,

Killer

Thank you for all of your replies but unfortunately none have worked. Here is a listing of my system according to belarc.com. Help!!

A while back I got a P111 850 with an onboard ESSTECH Allegro 1 sound chip. Being a diehard Privateer fan, I ran into sound problems. My operating system is Win XP Pro, so I went the easy way and used a dos boot disk. It took forever to find the right drivers on the net. The official site - ess-tech.com – wasn’t much help since my chip wasn’t listed. The files I found were:
ESSAUDIO.SYS 48,4 kb
ESSAUDIO.COM 12,3 kb
If you like, I can e-mail them to you ( I presume this is legal )
The necessary lines on my boot disk are as follows:
config.sys
DEVICEHIGH=ESSAUDIO.SYS
autoexec.bat
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 T4 J200
Echo NB. Switch to C: and type ESSAUDIO to set sound*

* For some reason I couldn’t get essaudio.com to run from within the batch file.

I found this at the official site:

"A: Not all ESS Technology sound cards support pure DOS mode. Pure DOS is called up when you boot your system to DOS 6.22 or Windows DOS 4.0 mode directly, instead of to the Windows desktop. For PCI sound cards, DOS mode is supported by their Windows 95/98 drivers in order to properly configure PCI resources in C:\CONFIG.SYS and C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT, and the DOS emulation is limited to IRQ5."

Don’t be discouraged. Keep hunting. The answer is out there somewhere.

I have a similar problem on WC3 - I used to run it with General MIDI in Windows 98, but nowadays I get exception 13. I have a similar computer - an old Compaq, with an ESS sound card. My only solution was to play the game in old fashioned FM MIDI, ie select SB compatible or somesuch in the install process. :(

re: Exception 13
I run P1 and P2 from a Dos bootdisk ( not via WinXP) and don’t get an exception 13 error.
Configuring the sound for P1 was hell. I had to work my way through nearly ALL the possible combinations of cards, IRQs, DMAs and PORTs.
Using Music Card: Ad Lib, Speech Card: Sound Blaster 16,
my “sound.cfg” file for P1 reads as follows:
2 1
904 -1 -1 -1
544 5 1 -1
4 0
Configuring the sound for P2 was via the autodetect function. No hassles.
Haven’t tried Prophecy (Win95 version) under winXP yet. Will do soon and get back to you if you’re interested.

re: Prophecy(win95) on CD, NVIDIA Geforce DDR video card, Esstech Allegro onboard sound chip, P3 866 and WinXP Pro.
Install OK
Sound OK
Movies OK
Gameplay OK
NB.
1) video card select set to software option, not Direct3d ( not tried)
2) Compatability set to Win95
3) POV hat NOT calibrated (messed up gameplay otherwise)
4) Pressing ESC during movies resulted in TOTAL lockup of computer!

WC4DVD can be run using the realmagic drivers with Creative's DXR series hardware decoders, as well. That'll cure your VOB errors. The DOS version of WC3 will not run under XP, without a dual-boot setup(or FAT32 partition on your XP drive and a boot disk), you won't be able to run it. The prophecy problem, unfortunately, I don't have an answer for. sorry.
