Ok, I used to play Privateer a very long time ago (on an old 486SX33mhz). Now, i have a much better machine an AMDAthlon 1.1ghz with 208 megs of ram...(a computer i built myself)...well, it seems like Privateer worked better on my old machine..

I've created a boot-up disk from Dos 6.22 and edited the config.sys and autoexec.bat files and got it to open (unfortuneatly without sound...but thats not the real problem)...

When I click anything, (and i mean ANYTHING), it opens with the control panel...whether i click launch or Main or anything, it goes to the control panel...now, I never remember having that problem on my old machine.

Anyway, I've tried many things, if anyone can help I would be forever grateful.

P.S. I've even tried different disks from different sources...no luck

Do you mean control panel as in the personal computer the player uses to load/save games, etc? That happens when you click both left and right buttons together - any chance your mouse buttons are clean?

On the other hand, if you mean the control panel as in the options screen (sound/music on/off, etc), well I can't help you. Privateer is notoriously bad at working on new computers.

yeah, its the control panel where you load/save games, look at missions and cargo...also, i use the computer everyday, i have multiple operating systems Dos 6.22, Windows 98, 2000, xp, linux...anyway, i'm pretty sure the buttons are clean...it also happens if i try to do it manually with the keyboard (you know, pressing tab then enter)...

i hope that clears up my question...thank you for responding, if you have any answers, let me know...

Thanks,

I'm not really sure what would cause that.. Do you have any odd joystick or mouse drivers installed? It could be some sort of input device conflict. If you disabled the mouse and went into the game (just using the keyboard) and everything was fine you'd know that was it.

well, i edited my autoexec.bat file to disable loading the mouse and joystick drivers and tried it again...no luck...i also tried to disable other things that may have caused the problem, no luck...

i can't figure out what it could be...i have 618K executable memory and 80K upper memory...that sould be enough, right?...

the only thing i have thats different than my old computer (other than the speed) is my dual monitors...but Dos doesn't support them so its not even activated...

I also tried to start up Privater:Rightous Fire, it has the same problem.

Thank you for any help,

P.S. I do have other operating systems other than Dos 6.22, (Linux, win 98, win 2000, win xp) is it possiable to play it in any of those?

That is a weird problem for sure.
Did you try to reinstall Privateer? Maybe it is corrupted (we all forget the most obvious sometimes).
You might also want to try a different memory menager then EMM386 (QEMM, 386MAX,...) if you got one.

Regarding other OSes: Nope. Privateer 1 only likes DOS. (Does work with pure DOS - not in a window - of win9x however).

Well, i tried to reinstall privateer, that didn't work..Now i'm looking for other memory programs (other than emm386). Also, i think i'll try to reinstall dos, maybe that'll work...if you have any other ideas please let me know. Thank you everyone for your help.
