Problems with Cyborg 3D Force joystick in Kilrathi Saga WC3

Hi. I recently got my hands on Kilrathi Saga. I love the first two parts of Wing Commander and I cant wait to play the third one, never played it before. Unfortunetly I have a problem with my joystick. It`s Saitek Cyborg 3D Force (USB). The game dosen`t see the stick. I tried going in to inflight options (ALT + O) but theres nothing there that would solve teh problem. I would enjoy the game much more if I could use the stick insted of the keybord. If anybody has a solution or any ideas about it I would be most grateful. Please help if you can.

Just to make sure, are you going into Alt+O while in flight? Can you switch to mouse control? Does the game let you check the joystick box at all? What operating system are you running? Do you have any other USB devices you could unplug to verify they are not interfering?

My operating system is win2k. The patch for running wc3 under win2k is installed. I tried running in compatibility mode, both win98 and win95, but it dosent change anything. Yes, I am going into ALT + O in flight and I can select mouse, joystick or keybord. When the joystick is selected and it`s allways selected when I start the game, the game is not responding to any joystick movment or buttons. Presing the calibration button in options does nothing. Now the funy thing is that in wc2 (kilrathi saga) the stick works fine. I have only one other USB device. It`s a DSL modem. Unpluging the modem didnt help.

Have you tried getting into the game controller or profiler software or control panel and trying different options? I'm not at a computer where I can check that right now. Maybe try unplugging the joystick, starting the game, and then plugging it in (making sure it initializes in the background while KS is running).

I did that but no resultus. In the sticks control panel theres not much I could do. When the game was running I checked out the control panel and the joystick was working fine in it, but not in the game. Another interesting thing is that even when the stick is not pluged in I can select it as a controller in the games inflight options. I also tried the stick on WC4 and it works fine.

Are there any other USB devices listed in the game control panel? If so try removing all but the joystick and/or select the stick as preferred device.

My apolgys for the long time it took me to answer last posts and many thanks for your help. There arent any other USB devices listed in the game control panel. Recently I borrowed a simple game port stick from a friend and tried useing it in wc3. The results were exactly the same as with the USB joystick. I also tried reinstalling the game and it also didnt help.

Have you tried fiddling with the joysticks deadzone in the in-game menu?

Could you please explain to me what did you ment? In the in-game menu I dont see anything called joysticks deadzone or anything similar to it. Did you ment joystick calibration in the in-game menu? When I press the calibration button there, nothing happens.

Yeah, it's really hard to say at this point. Back in the day we used to recommend going back to an earlier version of directx, but I don't think that's easy to do anymore. You could still try changing a few settings in dxdiag to see if there's any change. I don't think there's too much in the Input tab to really play with though. Maybe there's a secondary driver for something like your sound or video card which is causing a conflict. The game was never meant for Windows 2000.. the Win2k KS patch is letting you play, but it's very possible that it's not correcting whatever situation is causing this joystick problem.

Just a thought... have you tried it without the win2k patch but with win95,98 compatability mode. (which can be enabled in win2000 with SP4)?

Without the win2k patch the game wont run no mater the compatibility mode. Well, I think I tried everything there is to try, so I`am giving up for the moment. Sooner or later I`am gone put together some old computer and install win98 on it. Then I will try to enjoy this great game again. I wish to thank everybody who responded to my posts. I`am very grateful.
