Hello, I am so surprized there is so much focus on this game still :) but anyway down to business, this Is Tech support.

Ok my problem is with my sound settings, I found myjemm and decided to give it a try rather then tweeking with bootdisks all day and more then likely giving up my mouse support for memory. I was greatly pleased to see it try to load up and NOT complain about memory or no cd... but it asked me to fix my soundcard choices. well I got my music set up ... tested it with speech off .. worked perfect.. but trying every combo <music off included> i cannot get it to recognize my speech card...

I have a soundblaster 16... chip says vibra on it... the product number is CT2511-SBT and I belive the slot it uses is called an ASI slot ..<big'n'black>. I lost my install disc for it but windows gives me some drivers that work fine.. I am running windows 98 SE. I have had SFX in full dos back when I had a bootdisk for the game <same computer set up> and I am unsure if I need to find the exact drivers somewhere <creative doesnt even list the product number as a product anymore>or if It is just a flaw in myjemm. point is .. I dont need my music I need myself a sound when a Kilrathi is shooting a tachyon cannon up my tailpipe. Any help would be apreciated.

Sound Problem

Try a program call VDMSound and VDM LaunchPad. VDMSound when installed puts an extra option in the menu that when you rifgt click on the executable for the program you are running there is an option to "Run with VDMS" it emulates a DOS sound compatibale environment. I have a SoundMax onboard sound card that with VDMS I have been able to emulate SB Pro\16. If the game has a seperate sound setup like most of the early dos games did then you have to run the setsound command with the VDMS option as well, you may have to try different SB settings. I have been able to sucscesfully use this to get the sound to work on numerous DOS games. Hope it helps.

Great, no more booting the game error message .... but now the game hangs if i skip the intro or after the intro tries to go to the next screen <after the text "and the Kilrathi empire"... I am gonna play with this new stuff a little longer.. i feel i am so close yet so far away... thanks for the advice so far

*update*

After scouring the message boards for clues as to how to fix my problem... running updates ETC I finally threw in the towel and went to go play the game a bit more with no sfx... and with these vdmsound drivers the game crawls.... was gonna take 3 minutes to go from 300klicks to 600.... so I belive the vdmsound program isnt an option...

~still stuck but happy i get to blast a few retros to vent

Sounds like you have an ISA Vibra 16 based board you lucky fellow. this card will work *flawlessley* with almost any dos based game.
However, you need to find out what the irq / dma / IO port settings are for your card, either by looking at / setting jumpers on the card, or through a 'jumperless' setup program (which may be hard to find now: try www.driverguide.com).
If you are feeling lucky you could just trust the windows control panel (cough cough) but don't count on it.

If it is a PnP card you will just have to trust windows :-)

Then put a line in your autoexec.bat something like this:

SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330
| | | | |
I/O port | | | |
IRQ | | |
8 bit DMA | |
16 bit DMA |
MIDI IO port

Set up your games for a soundblaster, soundblaster pro, or soundblaster 16 and use these same settings.

Boot into DOS and enjoy!

Cheers.

Steve.
