Privateer with sound?

Hey, I've got a Windows 95 comp, running it through MyJemm1.4, and have found I can avoid the standard "Fatal Error: D002-FFFF..." thing by turning off speech, I can still run music though as a digital MIDI. In some cases, ie, by running Soundblaster for speech, Privateer does run but one or two laser shots and the thing locks up for a few seconds and sound effects go the way of the dodo. For the record, my speaker/sound card/whatever (okay, I'm not that computer literate) is a Creative Vibra 128 or something.

So privateer runs without speech, okay.

But... no laser sound, no afterburner woosh, no missile... um... woosh. Where's the atmosphere, the comforting words from the bartender after you realised you cant afford anything better than a tarsus.

Basically... I want speech to work without my computer going into a tizz. Do I have to go buy a real Soundblaster (will that work anyway?) or is there a tricky little bit of coding I can do to get sound effects and speech working? or anything?

Help me, oh pirates and traders of the gemini sector to break the silence!

How fast is the computer? DOSBox does a pretty good emulation of the Soundblaster.

The computer is an early version of the Celeron with 286 or so RAM, so its at least 4 years old. I tried running the remake of privateer which worked but was so slow at even the lowest settings that it was unplayable. I don't like my chances at DOSBox. However, I do have a "cutting edge" video card which runs at 8MB! (pity me).
