Privateer Strange Sound issue.

I have an odd issue with sound in Privateer. (first one) I can play the game with perfect sound and music with no problem at all for about 15-30 minutes, then out of nowhere the sound dies out and starts making a popping sound but the music keeps playing perfectly. In order to restore the sound I have to reboot my computer with the bootdisk. I have tried to figure this problem out and tried swapping sound options in the sound setup for the game but nothing worked. I would appreciate any and all suggestions relevant to the game. Thank you.

There should be a line in config.sys similar to this:
DEVICE = C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM 16384
Any number higher than 16384 will strangle Privateer for some reason. If it is already set to this number then I have no idea, sorry.

xENCLAVEx, I don't have a anwser. This happen to me to when played P1 two months ago. I needed save after each mission. SBLive does not work as well SB16 does in DOS. I think CL is following MS lead and is trying to get rid of DOS so I believe CL did not try to devolop them better. I would not be suprised if their next card does not DOS drivers that all.

If you ever check on CL support newsgroup when someone ask for help with DOS for SBLive's, CL support personal avoid them. You can't even download the DOS drivers from CL. I spoke to a CL support person once about this when I misplace my CD. He said CL does not provide the DOS drivers online. You need to get them off the CD. He basicly told me I'm out of luck.

It is less a bad stance from CL. I actually wonder how they got the Life as compatible as it seems. The problem is with PCI sound cards in general. Old software relies on ISA sound cards. On certain properties of them.
PCI cards need emulations, ISA don't. And an emulation is never as good as the original. That is why I still got an ISA sound card in my Athlon system. Might cost me a bit speed, but in exchange I have no problems. Good deal IMHO.

Re: Not very constructive, but it's always something.

I have an ESS Maestro-2, and I haven't had a single sound-related problem in P except for the one where you don't restrict the RAM to 16Mb.

I was doing so research on sound cards I believe at the ESS Maestro-2 does not reqiure emm386.exe to work. I would consider this a plus.

maestro & priv1

I have an ESS Maestro2 in a micron laptop that I would love to play P1 on. Would one of you kind people please post your config & autox for me? I have a W98 DOS boot disk, with aecu.sys in config.sys and maestro.com in autoexec.bat, and upon booting, maestro.com says WARNING your bios is controlling your IRQ's, boot windows, then go into DOS mode for DOS games. Well, I am running W2K on the laptop, so I don't think I can do what it says. If I ignore that message, and try to run P1, it says my sound card isn't set up right and to reinstall. I don't know what my sound card is set at, and I've tried just about every combination and no luck. If I install with no sound, P1 seems ok. Any hints? Thanks a bunch!!
