Privateer in 2k Professional?

My sincere apologies if this has been addressed before. But after looking at the previous threads about win 95/98 and the multiple pages of commentary, it was difficult to find any answers, so I figured I'd start a new thread.

I have re-installed one of my favorite games ever, WC Privateer, only to get an error message when trying to run it from Windows 2000 Professional.

Protected mode driver is not responding to EMS function calls.
Make sure your EMS driver is not configured using the NOEMS option.
If it is, replace the option "NOEMS" with "RAM"

A friend of mine, a programmer by trade (I'm a massage therapist, not a techy type, myself.), is perplexed as to how to get around this (if it's even possible.) If it's not possible, does anyone know where I can get a 386 cheap? =)

I'll try to check back here often. Thanks in advance,

Being a DOS program, Privateer expects to find expanded memory. Obviously whatever memory manager Win2000 uses does not offer EMS compatibility.

I'm fairly sure that the Win9x bootdisk method won't help in giving a DOS boot, so I'm afraid you'll need to hunt down an old computer. I don't think a 386 will be necessary, try looking for a 486, or even an early Pentium on eBay.

Win9x, the universe, and everything.

Sadly, Win98se was the source of a lot of problems, hence why I broke down and got rid of it. Getting to 2k in the first place was plenty hassle enough, so I'm not inclined to go back now that I finally got NTFS.

However, a friend of mine made a suggestion that I figured merited a run up the flag pole. Does anyone know of a decent DOS emulator for win2k? =)

No such animal. Even though DOS is a dead OS it can still be install on any PC. While games for systems like Atari or Commodore 64 do have emulator for Win9x. It's easier and cheaper to either dual-boot or buy a old PC on Ebay to play DOS games. This is why no one will very create a DOS emulator. No real need.

Hum... Maybe in like 5-10 yrs someone may than create a DOS emulator. You know when we are using 64/128 bit CPU/OS.

Or maybe someone could be working on one right now... http://dosbox.zophar.net

I just heard about it from Darkmage yesterday... he says it doesn't... I'm sure it would be interesting to keep an eye on, though.

I've been extensively testing dosbox. while it doesn't work yet... the creator has said he's finishing up a new 386 cpu core and he WILL get EMS in. he has told me that he will get privateer running eventually. right now he has other priorities.
