Alright ive tried everything and i cant seem to free up enough Dos Memory to run Privateer, ive probably read through about every post in this section of the site and cant seem to find a Solution so im hopeing someone can help me out.

Im currently running Windows 98 with atleast 63 MB's of Ram if that helps any, and my Soundcard is Soundblaster PCI 128.

Below is my Bootdisk's Autoexec.bat and Config.sys's contents.

Autexec.bat
----------------
@ECHO OFF
SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS
C:
Set Sbpci=C:\Dosdrv
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 T4
SET COMSPEC=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM
SET PROMPT=$p$g

Config.sys
-------------
DEVICE=C:\Windows\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\Windows\EMM386.EXE RAM 16384 /I=B000-B7FF
SHELL=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM C:\WINDOWS /P
DOS=HIGH,UMB,NOAUTO
STACKSHIGH=18,256
FILESHIGH=30
BUFFERSHIGH=25

I just recently bought this game after loseing my original one only this time i bought the Privateer CD with Rightous Fire included, I appreciate any help you guys might have in this matter. If you need anymore Info then tell me and i will try to get it.

Since you're actually not loading any device drivers, the only things I know of to try are:

1) Try loading emm386 into high memory (not sure if you can do that, but it doesn't hurt to try - replace "DEVICE=c:\WINDOWS\EMM386 blah blah" with "DEVICEHIGH=c:\WINDOWS\EMM386 blah blah"

2) Start up with step-by-step confirmation (f8 while starting, as though you wanted to put windows into safe mode) and make sure you're not loading doublespace, since that takes craploads of conventional ram and gets loaded before config.sys is processed.

3) Use dosbox 0.65 or MyJemm instead. I've never used MyJemm, but supposedly it lets you run Privateer under Windows without a significant performance hit.

How much conventional memory do you have free with that setup? Do mem /c at the command prompt.

I have tried Dosbox and it was working rather good but i started getting that 1303-FFFF Error even in Dosbox, i dont know what happened so i started trying to get the game to run in Pure Dos as ive heard people say the game runs alot better like that.

As for Myjemm i have tried that but a few seconds after i launch to space the Color goes crazy and the program hangs.

And for the Conventional Memory my current Boot Disk setup frees up about 552, 729 (About 552 Kbs whereas Priv needs atleast 570) No matter what i do i cant seem to get the Memory any higher...I'll try loading EMM386 into the High Memory and see what happens.

Alright, I got Privateer working but now when i launch to space and the Cockpit comes up the music slows down and so does the flying its like Privateer slows down when in Space...However ive noticed that if i dont load my Sound Drivers the Flying runs to fast but if i do load them it runs to slow inflight.

Sorry for the triple post but i got Privateer running flawlessly in Pure Dos Mode, I just plugged in my Gamepad to my USB Port Calibrated it and now the game works Perfectly...Thanks for all your help in helping me get the Game up and running.

You got the USB Gamepad running in DOS? Was this related to fixing the sound/speed issue?

Ya, Once i plugged the Gamepad upto the USB port of my computer the game started running just fine...Dont ask me why tho cause it surprised me too.

This is actually known behaviour for Privateer. P1 does have a bug in pure DOS mode on some machines that requires an analogue joystick to be plugged in in order for the game to play at proper speed, even if the joystick isn't used for playing. Didn't occur for me, but I head it from many sources.

I am not sure how P1 would work in pure DOS however or how an USB stick would work there. Maybe he used VDMS?

I said it was Pure Dos but acctully it wasnt i ment it was Dos from the Bootdisk i had set up, i couldnt get Privateer to run in Windows 98's Pure Dos and i heard from many people that was nearly impossible. Thats why i created a Boot Disk cause i figured there was no reason to try an get the game to run without one.

As for VDMS i did try useing it but it isnt for Windows 98 it only works on XP and 2000 i think. I just put my Boot Disk in i pressed F8 on Startup like Justice suggested to get to the Step By Step Confirmation for 98 i told it not to use the Double Space Driver and to load my Boot Disks Drivers...After that i plugged in my Gamepad and started up Priv it asked me to Calibrate it so i did and now Priv runs just fine.

Acctully i dont know if my Gamepad is USB or not im not very good when it comes to Computers, my gamepad plugs up to the back of my Computer but not the USB Port i think it hooks upto my Computers Gameport.

My Gamepad is the PiranhaPad PC from Interact.

I used to use MyJemm for Priv on my win98se computer
worked fine. was too slow in dosbox on that pc.
I could never get it to work booting to the win98 dos mode, although other dos games like the Seven Cities of Gold update/remake worked great

But since I found Gemini Gold I haven't bothered trying to use dosbox on my new pc. but i might once I get the other WC games off ebay or amazon and decide to replay those
