Privateer 2, Windows XP, no mouse in PAD & in-video selections

Can't move the mouse cursor in the PAD or when you pick between 2 options in the middle of talking to characters.
All other aspects of the game seem to work fine.

Anyone fix this problem?
 
I haven't played P2 in XP... Hm... Maybe if you decrement the video-hardware acceleration a notch (I'm still too fresh to tell you exactly where to find that option in XP though, sorry), so that the mouse/UI stays software?
