Privateer 2 - The Darkening Deluxe Edition Crashing During Videos

So, I'm playing Privateer 2 - The Darkening Deluxe Edition and I can't get past the opening set of videos, the game always crashes. When it crashes the entire computer completely locks up and the only option is a to completely shut it down. I've had this same problem on rare occasions with Windows Media Player, but it happens to infrequently as to not be a huge problem. I'm also using a the Speed Fix patch, prior to installing this patch this problem was much less pronounced.

Things I have tried:

1.) Restricting ffdhow (Both audio and video and both together and seperate.) from affecting the game's executable.

2.) Setting Windows 95 compatibility mode.

3.) Lowering the audio acceleration within DirectX Diagnostic.

4.) Various combinations of the above.

The game will usually crash, ironically, around the time the ship is crashing, if manages to get past that it crashes either early on in the credits or at the begining of the hospital sequence.

Any ideas?

Dou you have the dos version? Because for me the alternate CD-rom switch (ioctl) fixed this exact same issue, but I couldn't use the win upgrade I had to use dosbox.

I too am having a crashing experience, not in the movies or the launch sequence, but rather in the PDA. I leave Joes Tavern and click customs, but when I hit the exit button it freezes and I have to end the process. Has anyone else encountered this problem? If so is it fixable? I'm anxious to play. I've patched, compatibility set and kicked it and still nothing.

Im running XP Media center edition on a Pentium D 3.4Ghz, 2GB DDR2, With an onboard sigmatel soundcard (possibly creative). And a radeon HD4650

That sounds vaguely familiar. Have you turned off scene transitions (in the ALT+O menu)? If this is the DOS version, have you applied the patch? Sometimes copying some of the .IFF files from the disc to the game's install folder helps. I'd copy both BOOTH.IFF and SETS.IFF. Turning off hardware acceleration could also help.

If you are using dosbox, try out the alternate cdrom mounting swith "-ioctl".
