Privateer 2 Joystick problem... Please help

Hi there,

I've got a problem with the patched version from Privateer 2 with Windows 95 support. I've downloaded the files from OriginalTHPs homepage and installed the Win95 patch to run the game under Windows XP. And the speed patch (that was included)...
The game runs fine using the mouse but every time I want to play it with joystick it crashes on the calibration screen. (the screen with the 2 rectacles) ... when I press the "Exit" button then the game crashes with the following error:

The PC works perfect otherwise. It's a normal joystick on a normal gameport using a soundcard. I've also tried another PC with completely different hardware and an USB joystick - didn't work too... the same error.
The both PCs I tested the game on use Windows XP. All games work perfect (even WC 1 and 2 of Kilrathi Saga ;-) ... but not Privateer 2 with joystick


Has anybody experienced this problem, too?

Any help, please?

No Joystick for Me Either

Yeah, I have the same problem. Joystick calibration causes the game to crash on XP. I can't even get to the Options screen (Alt-O in spaceflight).

Hey there

Im having a similar problem. I probably need the Win95 patch (I have the UK EA CLASSICS version) and the slowdown patch. For some reason, my computer hates SLOMO and CPU KILLER. My joystick also refuses to calibrate; no matter what setting I use, it contines to get stuck doing loops.

Just a thought, no idea if you already did that:
HAve you tried simply switching to Joystick without running the calibration proggy? I mean via pressing Ctrl+J (or Alt+J, always mix em up ) - Maybe that works. Cause in WCIV I'm unable to run the calibration proggy, too, and the Joystick works after pressing Ctrl+J. Don't have Priv2 myself, and gave back my M8's copy a month ago, so can't test it myself - Sorry, if this didn't help you at all.

Lol. - One question: HAs anyone of you even bothered to visit the homepage of the creator? I ask, cause in his FAQs there is exactly this bug mentioned. - Here is the extract:

When I press ALT+O, and i finish calibrating my joystick, Privateer 2 crashes!
This is a well-known problem, and there is a fix that (i guess) will also work for you. The problem is, you cannot use the calibration program of Privateer 2, but you must edit a text file and write your joystick settings there. Open up c:\dark\dark.cfg. You will see a file like this one:

C:\DARK => The Directory you installed P2 to (sure)
JoyOn 0 => Enabled Joystick?
ThrottleOn 0 => Enable Throttle?
Joy 0 => Maybe Joystick already calibrated?
Joy Dead 0.100000 => Dead zone of the joystick (sure)
Joy cx 0 => Joystick Center Position X Axis (sure)
Joy cy 0 => Joystick Center Position Y Axis (sure)
Joy lx 0 => Joystick Lowest X Axis?
Joy ly 0 => Joystick Lowest Y Axis?
Joy rx 0 => Joystick Biggest X Axis?
Joy ry 0 => Joystick Biggest Y Axis?
Joy2 0 => Joystick 2 (=Throttle?)
Joy2 cy 0 => Center of Throttle?
Joy2 ly 0 => Minimum Throttle Pos?
Joy2 ry 0 => Maximum Throttle Pos?

Now all you have to do is find the correct values for your joystick. You might also be so lucky that someone also has the same joystick as you, therefore please have a look at joystick.txt.
