Privateer 2 in xp issues

I was trying to replay and run privateer 2 the darkening, in windows xp. (i bought it like 10 years ago . It was the localized spanish verson, but now i want to play the english version to hear the original voices.(also now i understand english much better))

i have some issues as i sometimes cannot get the sound, but its not big problem as i would turn it off sometimes.

but the real problem is i get crash to desktop everynow and then, which is anoying , especially if i'm after a difficult mission. I have to pretty much:

do a mission, land, save, go to space, do a mission , land , save, ad infinum


tried setting w95 compatibility in exe, i thing i tried vdmsound too.. maybe thast when i got the midi sound (dont remember well that one) .. but the crashes are still goin on.

any thoughs?
