Sorry for spamming your board, but I have serious problems with Privateer 2 (DOS Version) in Windows XP Pro.

I can install it without problems, but I can´t run the game, I get an error message:

Privateer 2 Fatal Error - cdromread - READ STATUS ERROR=ffff8103

I read somewhere in this board that I can run Priv2 with a bootdisk (http://www.geocities.com/faustino909/bootdisk.html), but this fails due to two reasons: I don´t have any bootdisks from another OS and I have my harddisk formated as an NTFS-partition.

My system: P3, 666MHz, TNT2 Pro, SB128 live, WinXP Pro

Has anyone a solution that really works?

I don't have Priv2, so I'm not sure, but when I read a CD-ROM read error, I rather suspect a problem with the CD.

Did you check ?

I too get the same error, its XP not being really that compatible in its compatability mode, (thanks Bill). Will keep working on it

jep. got the same.
(with exactly the same system configuration ;) )
really seems to have to do something with your cd-drive.
when you start without cd you get to a screen that tells you to insert disc 1 when you do so you crash anyway...

anyone got an idea?

P2 on Windows 2000

This might be some welcome news to some of you trying to get P2 to run on Win2K and XP. I have found several programs that have worked for me. the first one is DosBox 6.0 which has worked on some of myolder DOS games but still gives me problems with P2. The second and most promising is VDMSound. Now for VDMSound to work you actually have to download VDMSound 2.0, and VDM LaunPad 1.0 (still beta I think). For those of you that are'nt familiar with these programs, DosBox is a DOS environment emulator that also emulates VESA, and DOS sound compatibilty as well as a DOS environment. I have some luck with it on some of my DOS games. The VDM programs have been much more promising, especcially the VDM LaunchPad. Launpad lets you create custom PIF files with most of the common DOS settings needed to run the older DOS games, it also offers a basic VESA support option as well as DOS sound compatibality. It is very user friendly and I have been able to get about 75% of my older DOS games to run in Windows 2000 with it. Here is a list of the games I have been able to get working...

Daggerfall
Terminator: Future Shock
Privateer2: The Darkening
Ultima Underworld 2
The Complete Ultima7 series
Lords of the Realm2

The only problems I am experiencing now is with the mouse, on about half of these the game cursor will only go down the screen halfway. I don't believe this is a problem with the VDM software, but more a mouse driver problem. I am going to try and download a generic DOS mouse driver as the Launpad allows you to add additional option just as if you were using a boot disk with an autoexec.bat and config.sys. Well for those of you who have been trying to get your old DOS games to run I highly recommend the above mention software (all of which are freeware BTW). I would also be happy to help anyone who needs help using these programs. Good luck and happy gaming.
