Privateer 2 IMG File Problems

Okay... here's the issue I'm having. I lost my Privateer 2 disks some few years ago but I'd managed to create what I thought were backup disks and as I haven't played the game in ages I figured I'd reinstall on my new machine and have a go at some nostalgic WC fun. Well... Come to find out I just managed to burn the CD IMG files onto the "Backup" disks and I now have no Idea how to access them for installation.

I've searched all over the place and tried countless programs to try and get it installed but I must be missing something vital as it hasn't worked yet. And seeing as you guys are the primo WC site as far as everyone I've spoken to is concerned I figured I'd post my dilemma here and see if anyone had any input...

I have DOSbox and MagicISO... But I'm having trouble mounting the files in MagicISO to get them to work. I know I'm doing something wrong, so if anyone has a Tutorial or walkthrough on how to get it going or just a chucnk of info they'd like to throw my way I'd be very thankful.

I don't think we're allowed to talk about things like ISOs and "backups" here. It sounds like more of an ISO problem than a Wing Commander problem, anyway. Still, I'm curious, did you burn the ISO files directly to CDs or did you have whatever program burn the files within the ISOs onto the CDs?

If you want a copy that you can be sure will work, check here or here, it's not particularly expensive.

Well.. With the knowledge I have now that I didn't have back when I did this I realize that I simply burned the IMG/ISO files onto the disk. Now, I'm not horrible at computers but I'm not what people would call a Whiz at them so that's where my problem arises. I must apologize for posting this, however. I was unaware that discussing ISOs was restricted. I'll not pursue the matter further here.

Yea, my only other option is to buy a "new" copy of the game which I'm not absolutely sure I want to do at this time. I may just resign myself to playing Prophecy and WC 3

Thanks for the input mate.

Okay! Well I figured out the problem... Can't say as I'm thrilled with having to reburn the files but I did it and the install is running... But now I have an issue that you guys can probably help me with.

I'm using DOSbox as it's not the Deluxe edition Privateer 2 and everything runs smooth until I go to select my music device. Both of the options (Auto Detect and Manual) leave me with a Fatal Error - Open Failed on File Music.IFF ... I've checked and the file IS there but... I'm not sure where to go from here... Like I said previously, not a crazy computer geek type person. Do I need to find a replacement file or can I do something to the existing file to make it open with the installer?

Sincerely lost...

May I hitchhike on this thread for a moment?
I have the ISO non deluxe version, and the game asks me for disk 1 at start-up of game, a disk which is obviously in the DVD drive. I confirm with the space bar and nothing happens, the insert disk screen just reappears. when its in the CD-RW drive the game doesn't even start.

I remember once upon a time that many games had problems detecting the right sound card. Even with a Sound Blaster AWE32 I would have to set many games to SBPro levels just to get the game to run, even if AWE32 was an option. Does setting the sound to a lower level help?

Did you mount your drives correctly?

Could you elaborate on that or direct me the the sticky thread at this forum addressing this (if there is any)? Iv just started this "retrieval" of old games with iso's, so I don't know what you are talking about, sorry. I burned the iso on the 3 cd's with nero software and installed the game. I have a P3 933MHZ machine, so If i need virtual machine for DOS problems (if this problem is related to DOS issues) that could be another problem.

To get your Dosbox (are you using DOSbox?) to know that you have a CD-ROM drive and where it is you need to type in a command that looks like

mount d d:/ -t cdrom -usecd 1 -ioctl

or similar

Hmm yeah. Can you give me more details on what OS you are using and whether or not you are using Dosbox? I kind of assumed that since it followed Remy's comment. Dosbox doesn't automatically detect your harddrives and disk drives. You have to tell it what you have and/or what directories you want to have access to from within dosbox. It's a simple command line, which can be added to the end of your dosbox.conf file so that you don't have to do it every time you run dosbox. Keep in mind that a p3 is probably a little slow for running P2 in dosbox as it is at least without dynamic core enabled. Anyway, for getting dosbox set up, follow the suggestions in our techsupport section here: https://www.wcnews.com/techsupport.shtml#p2

If you are running win95/98 you shouldn't need any extra programs to get the game to run. If you boot into proper dos mode to run the game, you will likely need to make sure the appropriate cdrom drivers are running, which may not be possible with some newer drives. I don't think it should be an issue with old backup cds. You could try the windows version upgrade too but that has it's own issues.
