privateer 1 doesn't work

MRtN ONE55

Spaceman
ok, i'm probably just doing something horribly wrong. somehow. i'm trying to get privateer to run again. when i got this comp, i installed privateer, and it worked then. however, i uninstalled it (it was still on the other one) and now i can't get it to work. i've tried everything i've seen, and it isn't working. after typing in the command "priv" the computer freezes with the little "_" blinking. it's not a sound card problem, since it happens even when i installed without sound. i really have no idea what to do. any help would be really great.

You play with Joystick ???
Post your Autoexec.bat, config.sys, dosstart.bat and the specs of your machine

yeah, a logitech wingman extreme digital 3d. it has its own software and stuff, i dunno if that's why it's not working right.

after reinstalling my joystick stuff, i got a message instead of the computer freezing. it said 'abnormal program termination. jemm unloaded.'

Post your Autoexec.bat, config.sys, dosstart.bat and the specs of your machine

autoexec.bat:
@ECHO OFF
C:\MCAFEE\VIRUSS~1\SCANPM.EXE C:\
@IF ERRORLEVEL 1 PAUSE
PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;

REM [CD-ROM Drive]

REM [Display]

REM [Sound, MIDI, or Video Capture Card]

REM [Mouse]

REM [Miscellaneous]

config.sys:
FILES=60

dosstart.bat:
@echo off

REM Notes:
REM DOSSTART.BAT is run whenenver you choose "Restart the computer
REM in MS-DOS mode" from the Shutdown menu in Windows. It allows
REM you to load programs that you might not want loaded in Windows,
REM (because they have functional equivalents) but that you do
REM want loaded under MS-DOS. The two primary candidates for
REM this are MSCDEX and a real mode driver for the mouse you ship
REM with your system. Commands that you want present in both Windows
REM and MS-DOS should be placed in the Autoexec.bat in the
REM \Image directory of your reference server. Please note that for
REM MSCDEX you will need to load the corresponding real-mode CD
REM driver in Config.sys. This driver won't be used by Windows 95
REM but will be available prior to and after Windows 95 exits.
REM
REM This file is also helpful if you want to F8 boot into MS-DOS 7.0
REM before Windows loads and access the CD-ROM. All you have to do
REM is press F8 and then run DOSSTART to load MSCDEX and your real
REM mode mouse driver (no need to remember the command line parameters
REM for these two files.
REM
REM - You MUST explicitly specify the CD ROM Drive Letter for MSCDEX.
REM - The string following the /D: statement must explicitly match
REM the string in CONFIG.SYS following your CD-ROM device driver.

REM MSCDEX.EXE /D:OEMCD001 /l:d
REM MOUSE.EXE

specs:
pentium II 300MHz Gateway
64MB RAM
Win95
8.3GB hard drive
4MB nVidia Riva 128 graphics card
Ensoniq AudioPCI sound card (i think)
32x CD-ROM

sorry, i didn't notice the post files part of your message, so i added those onto the last one. anyway, i tried without the joystick, and it restarted my system, caused an error, and set my computer clock to december 1989. :confused: so, i don't know what's up.

Try this

Bootdisk to play Privateer or other DOS game

This work for me and others here:
Config.sys

devicehigh=himem.sys
devicehigh=emm386.exe ram 16384 i=b000-b7ff
dos=high,umb
fileshigh=30
buffershigh=30
devicehigh=vide-cdd.sys /d:mscd001 (is my CD-rom driver, replace with yours )

Autoexec.bat
loadhigh=mscdex /d:mscd001
loadhigh=a:\PCIAUD\SETAUDIO ( this is my Sound card Driver replace with yours)
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 T4
Loadhigh=mouse.exe

hm. i'm probably just clueless, but i don't know what my drivers are called. when i pull up driver details for the sound card, it just says "C:\windows\system\eapci.vxd". also, it says there isn't any cd-rom driver. it says 'no drivers are required or loaded for this device'.

This is because you are in Win mode, you need to be in DOS mode to load the Sound Drivers and Cd-ROM, in the CD of you Sound Cards´Drivers are the DOS Drivers.

WinME does not support DOS. Win9x does. By knowing which OS you have we would then know what kind of boot disk to make.

Your logitech wingman extreme digital 3d does not support DOS. You'll need another joystick. You can get one for under $20.00 which supports DOS. P1 only uses two buttons.

Ensoniq AudioPCI sound card (i think).

You'll need to know exactly which sound card you have. We need to use the correct DOS drivers. We were hoping that your c:\autoexec.bat C:\config.sys and C:\windows\dosstart.bat would provide this info but it didn't.

Check with www.Gateway.com to see what your hardware configuration and DOS drivers are. We can work around the mouse and CD-ROM with universal drivers but not the sound card.

P1 is a DOS only game. It can't be play in Windows.

hm. gateway.com doesn't let you do online tech support except for problems related directly to the system. is there any other way i can find out?

You stated you have a Gateway computer. Did it come with the sound card you currently have in your PC? If it does then gateway should list of your PC specs.
