Priv 2 the Darkening Sound Issues

Hi,

I have checked the other topics/threads and could not find another issue similar.

I have a brand new Dell laptop, with dual chip 1.8 Ghz, with integrated sigma audio on board running Win XP home.

I installed the Privateer 2 darkening (with a "patched" first CD for the game to run in windows). The game installed as normal, except it never asked me for my audio or vid card options.

I chose the compatability mode option for Win95, and disabled visual themes. I did NOT chose the 640 x 480 screen res or the 256 colors options.

Now the 1st cutscene videos play ok, but when on the planet and the cutscene asks me for a choice of what to do, I scroll over the options and when the scroll over sound starts, it is choppy and echos.

I take off from the 1st planet and go to the nav screen, trying to enter a nav point I have to hit the buttons 2 or 3 times to get a nav point to enter. Then the speech that says "destination selected" is also choppy and echos and the game slows. When some one comes on on my comms, the sound is again choppy and echos and the game slows again, so fire fights are very frustrating.

Can anyone offer some possible solutions?

Thanks

It sounds to me likely that there's some incompatibility between your sound card and the game. Occasionally these can be resolved by going into your soundcard/directx control panels and adjusting different acceleration/effects/options sliders.

Since you have the "patched upgrade" for Windows 95, do you have the original DOS disc around? What kind of processor do you have specifically? If it's a Core 2 T5600, then you should have plenty of power to run Privateer 2 in DOSBox. There's a chance you may encounter other issues, but DOSBox should do a much better job at handling the sound.
