Power of the PTC

Nah, I don't think it's that powerful. But it would probaly blow a big hole into one of the thinner sections of the ship.

From LOAF´s Concordia FAQ™:

Can you provide some history behind the Phase Transit Cannon?

In 2654 the Kilrathi tested their prototype Proton Accelerator Gun (aka 'Graviton Weapon') on Warhammer XII. The weapon fires a special explosive burst (which appears similar to a Particle Cannon blast) at a target. The explosion is followed by a 137 fold increase in gravity, which completely eliminates a target. The weapon went on to form the centerline armament of the Kilrathi Sivar dreadnaught, and was field-tested with the complete destruction of Goddard Colony. The Kilrathi weapon had a single operational drawback: it took several minutes to lock and fire -- it could not effectively be used against starships. For several months between 2654 and 2655 the Confederation's Task Force Delta took part in Operation Thor's Hammer: the pursuit and destruction of the KIS Sivar. The wreckage of the Sivar was returned to human space, where it was studied by Confederation scientists. The Concordia's Phase Transit Cannon is the resulf of these studies: a Proton Accelerator Gun which trades damage potential for speed... although it cannot destroy a colony like its forerunner, it can effectively target and destroy enemy capital ships in a single blast.

I don´t think the PTC works by punching holes on capships hulls. It seems to cause its target to collapse, disrupting its structure with the huge gravity change. So it could take out the cat Dreadnought. Heck, I´ve taken out that thing with my Excalibur! (on rookie, invincible mode :D )

Yeah, like if you fired it at a point about halfway down the hull, it might break the ship in half.

Good for you, want a cookie? Maybe chocolate chip, I could go for one of those about now. Not to brag or anything, but I took on the dreadnought with a thud on hero with no invinciblity--- and after being torn apart, took it out in a thud on Ace

Oooh, oooh, can I take part in the pissing contest :)

The Dreadnaughts aren't the problem, its the never ending waves of fighters and corvettes that always get to me.

I was being sarcastic. But I admit that I am not as good as some other players. i've only played the losing path once, and was quite content with the winning one. There is something about blowing up a planet....

I must concur. Even though it's been done in a lot of sci-fi, there's just something totally awesome about obliterating a whole planet and killing countless people in one swift blow. :D

Is the Midway equipped with such a gun? If yes, its pretty stupid that they tried to mount that cyristal weapon to the ship and fry the bugs. Fire the PTC couple of times and you have your bug barbecue party...

If you read the Encyclopedia or even the WC manuals, you'll note that the PTC was discontinued as a weapon in 2665, along with construction of new Confederation-class dreadnoughts, due to an unfortunate tendency to blow up when fired.

Besides, that crystal plasma cannon was a fleet killer weapon. The PTC targeted individual ships at close range, which would've allowed the bugs' plasma cannon to have fried the Midway and its entire escort group.

I haven't played the Secret Ops. So, enlighten me please. Are there any news about the crystal plasma weapon? Was the Confed able to concour the technical difficulties on adaptation of the gun to its vessels? Or did they just throw out the damn piece of glass :) ?

Also, are the bugs using it anywhere in Secret Ops? It would be cool to see a Confeg fleet vanishing in a big blast of fire, for a change :)

The Midway still mounts the giant crystal wang in Secret Ops -- so they must have figured out how to get it working again.

As LOAF notes, it's still on Midway come Secret Ops, so they must've managed to, between Aurora Finley and the rest of Confed's brain trust, figured out how to make it work again. Whether they can duplicate it yet's another question entirely, however.

And no, the bugs don't get a chance to use it in our view in Secret Ops.
