I want to play Privateer, yet when I play through DOSBox and do full screen it gets pixelated. I know its an old game but its even worse than it should be, ive had this problem with every emulator ive tried even for old consoles like SNES. Also the scaler options arnt much help at all. Does anyone know if theres a way to fix this? Resolution or something? I run DOSBox at 320X240 and my desktop resolution is 1440X900. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

NOTE: I know its more pixelated than it should be because i've played it in windowed mode as well as through MyJEMM on a windows 98 machine.

I don't think we really need the specs. If you think there is an actual problem here, completely uninstall and reinstall the game, and then follow the setup we have in the Tech Support Section. I'm thinking there's not really a problem here though. Of course the game will look far more pixelated when you play it fullscreen compared to in a window. It's no surprise that you've found similar results with every emulator or old game you've tried. You're physically taking a couple hundred thousand pixels and stretching them to cover 1.3 million pixels of area. What sort of screen did you use with myjemm? If it was an older CRT, then it very well could have scaled a little better. LCD monitors show off the defects that result from resizing images more. You could buy a better LCD monitor, but I don't think that will much change the fullscreen results. A better option would be to try to window it in exactly double the original resolution.

Its a 19" widescreen LCD, and Myjemm was done on a 15" CRT. So thats probably it, really makes sense now ~~~. Thanks for the help. Too bad sound didn't work on myjemm. Ill give the double size a go.

Well, there's the problem right there. Run DOSbox at a higher res, perhaps at your monintor's native 1440x900? (old DOS games actually don't look bad stretched to 16:10, and most of the time you'll never tell the difference)

If you don't know how to do that, then use a front-end like D-fend to help you.

And a good scaler would help too. The overall best looking scaler is IMHO is OpenGLHQ, which is also the fastest scaler, as the work is done by the video card. You will need to download a CVS version of DOSbox to use it though.

Old games can look great even on a 30" LCD, as long as you have access to the right scaling options.

Yeah, of course, but I don't think too many people here are going to be obscure scalers at all. Trying to simply double the resolution should look really good though.

Hey thanks for all this help guys. Whats DOSBox CVS? Is that a version I have to pay for or something?

There is no version of DOSBox that you pay for. CVS versions are experimental releases between major versions.

Okay guys, im the threadstarter. I decided it would be best If I got a proper username and everything. So anyway I tried that OpenGL thing and it just made everything smooth. Im not a fan of those types of scalers. However I realised my version of DOSBox is .63 so I upgraded to .65. It actually looks much better now. Windowed is obviously still better but the fullscreen is much improved.

So thanks for all the help.

That's good to know. I haven't heard anything about 0.65 being any better at scaling. I'm surprised there was a big difference.

So am I. Theres a good chance it was because all settings got changed back to default with the new version. I played around with the settings on the old version a fair bit and may have changed some things for the worse without knowing.

Just a sidenote, OpenGLHQ is not in 0.65, there is a scaler option called OpenGL, but it is not the same. Try the advinterp2x or 3x scaler, I think you'll be surprised :)
