Hi All
I just ressurected my dos computer to play some old classics (such as privateer ) but the game only supports horrible horrible FM synth midi and GM.
I remember back in the day you could add support for the AWE32 by replacing one sound driver file with the awe32 driver. (this is for games that used the miles audio library, which was most of them)
There are 2 types of drivers, real and protected mode drivers. ive had a look at the sound drivers in the privateer TRE file and they appear to be real mode drivers (strange cos privateer is protected mode, but it wouldnt surprise me if origin were pulling evil programming tricks to get things done).
I tried patching the awe32 real mode driver into the TRE, no luck. the protected mode driver didn't work either.
So its possible that Origin modified the sound libraries to get the real mode driver to work with the protected mode game via evil programming tricks
Now, if you've read this far, my question is:
Does wing commander 3 use the JEMM memory manager?
i think that WC3 has AWE32 support, however i dont have WC3 so i can't find this out.
If it does use the same memory manager, then its possible they did the same evil tricks to WC3's sound libraries and therefore it may be possible to patch them into privateer and get AWE32 support
If it does, could someone try extracting the AWE32 driver from WC3, and i can try patching it into the Privateer TRE file and with some luck it might just work
