no speech or explosions

WC1 does not have speech. The only versions with speech that I'm aware of are the Sega CD version and the Super Wing Commander remake version. I think the Super Famicom might have speech but it would be all in Japanese...

I don't know what you mean by exploisions. Of course things explode. And with a soundblaster there is a sound effect for it.
 
There is no real "explosion" sound in WC1, it uses the built-in sounds from adlib and roland synthesizers respectively, and found something that came close, wing commander has no digital recorded effects whatsoever.

Take a mission where you engage a capship, first destroy all fighters around it, and then the capship, you'll hear something as you see the ship's sections blow up. It was the best they could do at the time.

The Super Famicom is the Japanese version of the SNES -- no speech there. :) The FM Towns port has partial speech (taunts) in Japanese.
