No Sound in Privateeer

Hi, I am having trouble getting my sound to work properly in the game. I keep getting hisses and pops during the intro and game play. I have the CD version that includes RF.

My config.sys

Device=C:\Windows\Himem.sys
Devicehigh=C:\Windows\Emm386.exe Ram

My autoexec.bat

My system has

AMD 800Mhz Athlon
1gig RAM
MicroStar Mobo K7T Pro
Creative Labs CD-Rom(not being used due to copying the .tre files onto the HD)

The Mobo has built in sound through the VIA Chipset, and the Viafmstr.com allows sound in DOS. I also have my BIOS setup to allow for Sound Blaster emulation.

Is there something I should change in my BIOS, Config.sys, or Autoexec.bat? Would I be better off buying a Sound Blaster sound card? Like the SB Live 5.1 or a different SB card?

Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Just change your emm386 line to this:

devicehigh=C:\windows\emm386.exe ram 16384 i=b000-b7ff


But the Via chipset on-board sound is very crap, so maybe it will not work.

Thanks for the reply. Will that line make a big difference for my sound or is it more to free up Conventional memory?

Some sound-cards work with problems if you use all of you RAM, with the new line only will use 16 MB, but i have a VIA chipset with on-board sound that has crappy sound with Privateer, so maybe you need to buy a new sound-card

I'll give that a try and see what happens.

With your sound, do you have any hissing or pops when someone tries to talk?

Do you allow the music to be installed with the speach installed?

or Do you just use the speach?

I use both music and sound, music is OK, but sound and speech is just like you said and then a crash and have to reboot.
 
OK I'll have to log off and give that a try. Hopefully it won't crash, which I haven't had yet, just can't stand the noise from the speech when it acts up.

Thanks again for the help....I'll let you know how it works. If it still acts up I guess I will have to go out and buy a SB Live. :)

It works like a charm, speech and music.....no hissing or popping!

I even get to use sound and music.

Guess I don't need a new sound card after all. ;)
 
I will enjoy, it's been years since I've been able to play one of my favorite games...one of the Best All Time Games is what I should say.:)
