New TV

I've been planning to get a new tv for the new XBox this year, and with the official system announcement coming on Thursday, my ideal purchasing window is opening. Been doing quite a bit of research, and I've picked out a top contender.

After shipping/taxes/etc, Amazon would have it for $2100. Best Buy would be about $2700. Any smart tv people have anything to add? I've already narrowed down the search quite a bit lately, so I'm not too interested in recommendations for anything drastically different or relatively minor. But if anyone knows about outstanding issues with this model and knows of a similar better one, I'd be interested in that.

The runner up is this. Smaller Samsung for $100 less. I've compared the two at different stores, and I think I prefer the Toshiba. Sometimes it looks good, sometimes it looks bad, it's very hard to get a good idea of tvs from the horrible setups they have at tv stores. I think overall, the Toshiba looks best. I have quite a bit of other Toshiba equipment (digicam, laptop, tv, etc), and it's always been really great.

I think the only impending new feature I'd miss out on by buying now instead of in November would be tvs with 1080p support, but I don't expect the new consoles and DVD players to support that for quite some time. I can also use a tv right now for current XBox and movie stuff. My current one is only 20" (Toshiba flat crt). I don't fully understand what I'd get with the integrated tuner on the 52HM94 model, but it seems like for $400 more I'd be able to get some open air HD broadcasts. I don't watch normal tv, so I don't think I need that.

Nice, Chris, very nice. I'm not a video expert and thus I'm not qualified to probably answer any questions you posed. It sounds like you've already done your homework on this. I currently have a Toshiba 36 inch screen that I use and I've never been happier, Toshiba makes some quality products. I'm sure you already knew that.

Heh, that's awesome! Looks like you need clear some more room for it though. :)
The new xbox titles are going to look fantastic on that screen...

Yeah, there's plenty of $2000 plasma tvs, but I wouldn't dare buy them. All HDTVs aren't created equal. Image quality varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, and the $2000 plasma tvs are actually "EDTVs" that don't do the high resolution stuff I'm looking for. Plasma is also horrible for video games, as it's the most susceptible to burn-in. People kind of hold it out there as the ideal, but there are pros and cons to every new television technology. For what I plan to do, I'd take this model over a $4000 level plasma that I could get for half price.
