need some help with privateer 1 with windows me

I have loaded ms-dos patch and transfered .tre file. Upon booting in dos I type cd\privater <enter> priv <enter> and my box freezes...any suggestions??
I have a HP Pavilion XE813. Some of your threads refer to sound chip problems with win me, I believe I have a chip rather than a card. help...
