MyJEMM

Hi it's me, the guy with the joystick troubles.
Anyway I got MyJEMM and im having trouble. How do I skip the calibration screen? I only have one joystick so I cant calibrate the second. I originally bypassed this by using my joypad, but that wont work anymore. And the title screen would get to a certain point then freeze up for a couple of seconds making some funny noise then it would be fine and then a couple of seconds later it would freeze up again, same noise. And my final problem is the mouse. In all screens except the one where you type your name the cursor will will go to the top left hand corner of the screen and when I move it, it just goes back. Can anyone help me with any of these problems?

EDIT: oh yeah also when I manage to take off the ship is always rotating as if the joystick is pushed to the top right corners limits, I managed to move in some way with joypad, but not the joystick.

The game might be intercepting another USB device. Take your joya.dat file and make a copy named joyb.dat. This will make Privateer think the imaginary second stick is calibrated. Do you get past the noise and freeze? Try turning off all sound and music in the installation menu and loading. If you can start normally, then it's probably your sound options that need to be changed. Is the mouse USB? It's being considered an uncalibrated joystick. Perhaps creating the joyb.dat file will fix that. You're also going to want to hit ALT+O or go into the options screen and select joystick flight rather than mouse flight. The ship rotation is the same issue.

How many axis does your joystick have? Maybe Privateer is confused with a rudder or pedals (often implemented with a small slider and a rotating stick).

Ive fixed it with the copying of joya, thanks for that. I havn't got round to the sound options yet, but every other sound works, its almost as if my computer cant handle it, but it can since apart from the joystick problem while playing it was fine.

Ah no it isnt playing fine. It seems to lock up any sound effects happen and then get better until another sound effect, I've narrowed this down to speech as everything runs fine when just music has been selected through install.exe

Try a different sound blaster in the menu. DOSBox simulates a very specific set of sound card conditions, but you'll have to see what IRQ, DMA and Port yours is set to in Windows.

Yeah, that's why I said you have to look them up in Windows. If you were using DOSBox, I could tell you exactly what settings to use. You'll need to go into your device manager and look up the details on your soundcard. See what IRQ, DMA and Port it's using and plug that into the Priv installer. It's possible you might still have a config.sys/autoexec.bat dictating settings, and then you'd want to pick those.

Oh sorry I misunderstood, ive changed settings to my sound card ettings, before I did this I got that nasty D002-FFFF error. I might have to play without speech and therefore sound effects. Id rather not so if you have any other ideas I would be grateful.

I don't understand where you are now. So you changed the settings, which got rid of the error, so what happens now? Did you check your config.sys and autoexec.bat to see if you have some legacy driver settings dictating your sound card? If you didn't have the USB joystick, I'd say to drop to DOS. You're just sort of in a tricky middle ground there. Ideally you'd be running in plain DOS or DOSBox, but obviously both of those are impractical here. MyJEMM does have conflicts with various sound cards. You just have to try different configurations in the installer until you get the one that best matches what you have in your system. If that still doesn't go, one of the following limitations of MyJEMM might be affecting you.

Sound card compatibility is likely to be a problem. The game has only been tested with a real SoundBlaster 16 ISA, a SoundBlaster Live and an onboard CMI 8738 chip. If you have problems you may need to disable sound in order to play the game.

Digital sound effects used by the game are more likely to cause problems than the music. Just disabling sound effects may solve sound card compatibility problems.

WDM sound card drivers aren't likely to work. If possible, switch to VxD based drivers.

Damn thats probably my problem. I have been recently playing with just the music, I don't seem to mind overly much, it's such an awesome game, but am I missing out on a lot?

Well, the game is still tons of fun without that stuff. I'd hate to miss out on it, but missing out on the game entirely would be even worse. You only need about 1 GHz to run Privateer in DOSBox, and sooner or later you'll be due for a computer in that range and you can play through again with the speech and effects. You could try another emulator, though I don't have much experience with other ones. https://www.wcnews.com/news/update/5058 and https://www.wcnews.com/news/update/4763 are some alternatives.

Okay thanks for your help, I was going to post this in another forum but ill say it now.
I know the game is very non-linear and very free, but if I wanted to continue the story how do I go about it? the intro movie isnt all that insightfull.

Once you're done taking random missions and building a good ship, talk to Sandoval at the bar in New Detroit.

Do I need a jump engine thingo to get there? and a couple more questions. How is the mercenary and merchant guilds better than random missions? How do I get enough money to buy new ships? ($150,000 is quite a lot.) And one more question about that vdmm sound thing, when I try to install it a message pops up telling me I cant install unless im an administrator but I am not on a network. How do I install it?

I haven't ever used VDMSound. It sounds like it wants administrator account privileges though, which have nothing to do with being on a network. If your computer has multiple accounts, it sounds like the one you're logged in as isn't the admin.

You'll need a jump engine to leave the Troy System, and you don't want to start the story until your ship is way more upgraded than that. In fact, you don't even want a Tarsus on your first go-through. The mercenary and merchant guild missions are a bit harder and give you more money in return. A lot of the merchant/cargo stuff has you going to other systems though, so skip that for now. Later on in the game there's individual components that go for more than $150,000. The base price of the ship is the least of your worries, because if you only have enough to buy the ship, you'll be horribly crippled without money to afford the expensive engines/shields/weapons you'll need at that point.

So how do I get so much money? Do I save up or something?
Oh and as for VDMSound I only have one account, so how do I set it to administrator?

Yeah, you save money..

If you only have one account, it is the administrator. If it's telling you it's not, you have another account or there's some problem. I've never used that program though, so I have no idea about the nature of the problem.

Well I've been to FAQ's and the like but I cant find anything to help me, soem other guy had the same problem but there was no answer. But thanks for all your help, if it wasnt for you Id probably never have gotten it working at all. Thanks
