My Fleet

You've probably seen most of these before but I thought I'd share them again anyways. :) I've designed a little fleet of ships that probably all still need a lot of work done on them but at least the basic forms are there right now. We'll start with the Alexander class destroyer, I initially designed it along the lines of a submarine but as it took shape I realized it really was more of a cross between that and a destroyer. Here's a picture of it:

Next up is the Doberman class cruiser. This ship was actually the first one I modelled...as such it doesn't really seem to have any big turrets. I named it Doberman because I envision it as being quite tenacious and a ship capable of swiping broadsides inflicting heavy damage. It's also probable the worst rendering of all my ships (the light setup I think is overexposing it).

Now on to the carrier! No suprise here...it looks like a modern carrier in space practically. This Kangaroo class carrier forms the backbone of the fighter ships and depends heavily on them for it's defense. (I used a modern carrier for inspiration when designing this ship).

Finally, the big dog. Here is the Goliath class battleship. The flagship of any fleet, this ship eats destroyers for breakfast and can tangle with just about anything that's thrown at it. This is my latest model...still needs lots of work but it's in good shape.

Not too bad
the carrier and battleship looks very similair to our modern day carriers and battleships, but then you have to get your ideas from somewhere. I like them, what kind of era would those ships be seen around???

Maj.Striker has already said a couple of times that these are not supposed to be WC ships.

...Although that does beg the question - when you're done with this fleet of yours, are you planning to do anything with it? Space battle animations, for example, are always nice ;).

I like the Doberman myself. Good renderings; are you planning on making bigger pictures available?

Yep, Quarto's right on, these are not supposed to be any type of WC ships (I'm not all that big on "fan" creations...certainly don't have anything against people that do, I just personally avoid it).

As for what I'm going to do with it...hmm, I had started a movie clip involving a couple of the Alexander class Destroyers taking on a 3 pack of the Doberman Cruisers but...well I've never really been that good at animations. I'm about halfway done with it, I could try to finish it out.

Here are some links to some higher resolution pictures of the ships (1024x768)

Also here is some pictures of one of the fighters:

The fighter reminds me of an Epee/Ferret/Talon hybrid. Did they influence the design or were you more inspired by real-life warplanes?

Eraser! Haven't heard from you in a long long long time! Takes me back a while! Thanks for the compliments, guys. The fighter did have some Epee inspirations undoubtedly (almost every model I make has some sort of WC inspiration) but I just drew out a basic diagram and worked from there.

Excellent job Stryker!

Pardon my ignorance, but what kind of program, training and experience would I need to learn to design space ships like these?

Training? None. Just play around and search the web for some good tutorials (there's millions out there). Program? Just about any decent program can do this for you...there's an abundance of them, 3d Studio Max, Lightwave 3d, Maya, Carerra, Cinema 4d etc...

I've played with just about all of the above programs at some point...they're all great and the best one would be dependent on which one you'd feel comfortable with. For just learning and basics I would suggest Blender...which is free! :)
